From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese ("chorando a saluçadas", 13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria); from salouco (sob; hiccup) +‎ -ar, from Vulgar Latin suggluttium, from singultus, under the influence of choricar (to whimper). Cognate with Portuguese soluçar, Spanish sollozar.[1]
