   • 新(しん)天皇(てんのう)の即位(そくい)によって上皇(じょうこう)、上皇后(じょうこうごう)となったご夫妻(ふさい)は、今後(こんご)は一切(いっさい)の公務(こうむ)から退(しりぞ)く。 ¶ 日本(にほん)政府(せいふ)が定(さだ)めた「上皇(じょうこう)」、「上皇后(じょうこうごう)」の英語(えいご)表記(ひょうき)はそれぞれ、「Emperor Emeritus」、「Empress Emerita」。

     Shin tennō no sokui ni yotte jōkō, jōkōgō to natta gofusai wa, kongo wa issai no kōmu kara shirizoku. ¶ Nihon seifu ga sadameta “jōkō”, “jōkōgō” no eigo hyōki wa sorezore,“Emperor Emeritus”,“Empress Emerita”.

     From the new emperor’s enthronement the couple who are now jōkō and jōkōgō will withdraw completely from public duties. ¶ The Japanese government has determined that the English translations of ‘jōkō’ and ‘jōkōgō’ are ‘Emperor Emeritus’ and ‘Empress Emerita’ respectively.
