Georgian

Etymology

From Middle Georgian ლამაზი (lamazi, beautiful). First attested in the 12th century.

Usually said to be borrowed from Arabic لَمَّاز (lammāz, fault-finder, captious critic, caviler, carper) from the root ل م ز (l m z).[1][2][3] The term underwent a special sense development within Georgian. Compare Middle Georgian ლამაზობა (lamazoba, deceitfulness) in Visramiani, preserving an older meaning.

Alternatively, borrowed from Classical Persian نَمَازِی (namāzī, a praying person; devout, or in the constant habit of praying; clean, pure, fit for prayer), from نَمَاز (namāz).[4]
