Alemannic German

Etymology

Uncertain. Folk etymology connected it to Bär(in) (bear), but a Celtic origin is more likely, such as a connection to Verona or Proto-Celtic *berna (cleft), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (to carve out, cut).[1][2] More at Bern.

Pronunciation

Proper noun

Bärn n

  1. Bern (the capital city of Switzerland; capital city of Bern canton)
  2. Bern (a canton of Switzerland)
