field hockey (uncountable)

  1. A form of hockey played on a grassed pitch with a hard rubber ball instead of a puck.

Usage notes

  • In parts of the world where field hockey is more prominent than ice hockey it is generally referred to simply as hockey. This is equally true of ice hockey.
