From Proto-West Germanic *ganōg, from Proto-Germanic *ganōgaz, whence also Old Saxon ginōg, Old English ġenōg, Old Norse gnógr, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌽𐍉𐌷𐍃 (ganōhs).
