From Proto-Germanic *arbijanumô, *arbijanumjô, equivalent to ierfe (inheritance) +‎ *numa (taker). Cognate with Old Frisian erfnoma, Old High German erbinomo, Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌱𐌹𐌽𐌿𐌼𐌾𐌰 (arbinumja). Compare also Old Norse arftaki and arftakari.
