'Miley Cyrus Unplugged': We rustle up the fashion details

Miley Cyrus Unplugged

Instead of stripping down for her MTV Unplugged special, Miley Cyrus sequined up, going back to her Nashville roots and tipping her bedazzled hat to country music legend Dolly Parton.

Joined by backup singers in matching outfits, material cowgirl Madonna, and a guy — or two? — in a horse costume, Miley performed wearing more clothes than usual.

In an Instagram tease for the show, Cyrus’ stylist Simone Harouche posted a picture of a pasties-wearing Cyrus with the hashtag #bobmackiecowgirl, giving us a taste of the sparkly looks we’d see. (It was previously reported that, in addition to designs by Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli and Jeremy Scott, the singer will wear pieces from the archives of Bob Mackie on her upcoming Bangerz tour. Mackie is perhaps best known as the man who designed the costumes for The Carol Burnett Show, wardrobed Barbra Streisand in Funny Lady, and dressed Cher in a Vegas showgirl-inspired ensemble for the Oscars.)

Hello, Dolly! Clad in a red gingham spandex catsuit with a classic Western yoke designed by her stylist Simone Harouche, Cyrus kicked off the show by performing her single “4X4.” The singer accessorized with a rhinestone-flecked cowboy hat and boots, a denim Chanel purse, and matching backup dancers.

Cyrus ditched the wig and made a quick change into an oversized denim jacket and blue-and-gold sequined jeans from British label Ashish, a triangle bikini top, a vintage Chanel Vanity bag, and a ten-gallon hat from Eric Javits before being joined by Madonna — in a sequined silk fringed rodeo shirt and flared trousers from Fauto Puglisi — for a medley of Madge’s Western-themed “Don’t Tell Me” and Cyrus’ party anthem “We Can’t Stop.”

“That was pretty f—-ing cool, you guys,” Cyrus told the audience after the duet. “It sounds super-lame, but as a pop star it’s pretty cool performing with Madonna . . . Today was one of those days that it was really easy to get out of bed, put on a bikini and sing with Madonna.” Amen.
