Emma Samms is checking back in for more General Hospital

Holly Sutton will return to Port Charles… again.

Emma Samms is returning to Port Charles.

The veteran actress, who originated the character of con artist Holly Sutton on General Hospital in 1982, is set to reprise her role on the long-running soap opera in early September, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed. Variety first reported the news.

Holly first joined the ABC sudser as a love interest for Anthony Geary's Luke Spencer, helping to orchestrate a complex oil grift before betraying her duplicitous family. After Luke was presumed dead, Holly moved on to his best friend, Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers), whom she married to avoid being deported but eventually formed a genuine romance with. Fans considered Holly and Robert to be one of the show's most successful couples.

Holly was seemingly killed in a plane crash in 1985, enabling Samms to join the cast of Dynasty the same year and eventually bring her character Fallon Carrington to the spin-off The Colbys. Her GH character was then brought back from the dead in 1993 for an 18-month stint on the show, which ignited huge drama as she found Robert had remarried in her absence — and then he seemingly died in an explosion with his new wife, prompting Holly to eventually leave town again.

Samms made sporadic returns to GH over the next three decades, appearing in multi-episode runs in 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2020, 2022, and 2023. It's not immediately clear whether Holly's re-entry to the show will last longer than her prior guest stints, all of which were shorter than six weeks.

Crucially, Rogers' Robert also recently returned to GH, so it seems plausible that the former lovers' paths could cross once again in Samms' next set of episodes, as they briefly rekindled their romance during Holly's most recent stint on the show.

Samms reacted to fans' excitement over her previous return in a Soap Opera Digest interview last year.

"I'm really relieved that they enjoyed what I did before; it meant the world to me," she said. "That's who we're doing this for; everything we do is for them, and their enthusiasm and support is what motivates me. I feel I have to get it right, to entertain them; that's what absolutely motivates me. There's absolutely no other reason to do it! They have consistently been kind to me, consistently enthusiastic and encouraging and very vocal, and I'm very grateful."

Samms' most recent arc on the show saw Holly help attempt to exact revenge on her enemy Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), who had killed her sister (also played by Samms). Since Victor was killed off last year, perhaps Holly can rest a little easier when she makes her way back to Port Charles.

Samms' return comes shortly after the announcement that Rick Hearst's Ric Lansing would come back to the soap after an eight-year absence.
