Kevin Costner's Horizon 2 pulled from August theatrical release

Hold your horses — Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2 is no longer coming to theaters in August.

The Western sequel was originally slated to ride into theaters on Aug. 16, but Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that it has been pulled from the schedule and doesn't have a new release date.

"Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on Aug. 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and Max," a New Line Cinema spokesperson said in a statement. "We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the US discover the film in its theatrical run."

"The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying," Costner's Territory Pictures added in its own statement. "Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride. We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2."

Horizon tells multiple different stories about the settlement of the American West. Costner plays horse trader Hayes Ellison, with an ensemble cast including Michael Rooker, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, and Danny Huston, among others.

The first movie in Costner's planned four-part epic Horizon: An American Saga bombed at the box office, only making $11 million on its opening weekend debut. It was expensive to make and largely self-financed by Costner. "I’ll risk those homes to make my movies," Costner said of his real estate holdings in a press conference at Cannes in May. "I want to leave those homes to my children, but my children will have to live their own lives."

As Costner previously explained to Entertainment Weekly back in May, he's been wanting to tell the story of Horizon for decades. His son Hayes is even named after the lead character Costner plays. "I just don't fall out of love with things I like. I am always looking for the next great movie," Costner said.

The first Horizon will be available digitally on Premium VOD on July 16 and is still available to watch in theaters. A streaming premiere date on Max has not yet been announced. Advanced tickets already sold for Horizon 2 will now have to be refunded by theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which was first to break the news.
