🛰 As reported by the BBC, Kayrros analysis revealed one of the worst methane leaks ever recorded took place last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan. This massive methane release was previously denied by the owner of the well and dismissed as ‘water vapour.’ Our analysis has now been verified by the Netherlands Institute for Space Research and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and confirmed by BBC Verify. Based on our findings, 127,000 tonnes of the gas escaped when a blowout started a fire that raged for over six months. The environmental impact of the leak is equivalent to the emissions of 717,000 petrol cars for a year. 📰 The Guardian newspaper, citing Kayrros data drawn from the European Space Agency - ESA's Sentinel-2 satellite, reports that between March 2020 and May 2023, about 329 hectares were cleared at the site of the Tesla gigafactory near Berlin. That's equivalent to about 500,000 trees – or more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Chief Analyst and co-founder Antoine H. points out in the article that this 'has to be put in perspective against the benefit of replacing internal combustion engine cars with electric vehicles.' Although the lost trees were equivalent to about 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the annual amount emitted by 2,800 average internal combustion engine cars in the US, it's a fraction of the number of the electric cars that Tesla produces and sells every single quarter. But after so much greenwashing, the public are rightly suspicious of any 'green' claims made by powerful companies. Satellite imagery can tell us who is telling the truth, who is honouring their promises, and who is pulling the wool over our eyes. That's what will ultimately illuminate the most direct path to net zero – and a greener future. Antoine Rostand, President and co-founder of Kayrros, has called on the United Nations to bring together the nations of the world and help drive us towards net zero by encouraging action guided by data. Writing for ESG Investor, he explains that earth observation technology exists not only to expose ‘greenwashing’ and bad climate behaviour, but to guide policy as we continue on our journey towards net zero. The UN Climate Change’s Recognition and Accountability Framework is a hugely promising development for this reason. ☀️ The US Energy Information Administration expects a total increase in US solar capacity of 37 GW by the end of the year. Don’t bet on it. Our analysis shows up to 25 projects might not make it to the grid on time. In recent years, EIA projections of new solar and battery capacity additions have been somewhat inconsistent. On June 25, we added 70 MMb of storage capacity to our monitored assets database, following the construction of new tanks worldwide, primarily in China. This reflects the spillover of China’s expanding strategic reserves into commercial tanks.
