What do you do if your data mining project involves handling large datasets?
Sampling has been the cornerstone of statistics for decades, however, in large data projects, it's often underutilised and models are trained on excessive data leading to poor results, higher cloud clost and not helping the carbon emissions. At Club Med we ensure that minimum data is used through robust sampling and processing is limited to get the right outcomes with least carbon emissions.

What do you do if your junior data professionals lack resilience?
Feedback is essential. At times, young professionals chase roles that is not their passion or expertise. At this points it's important to detect that early unless not done in the recruitment phase. Provide the feedback constructively with some training, monitor progress for few weeks and if things don't work redirect to a role that's more aligned with core competences.

You’re trying to integrate data from multiple sources. What tools can help you do it right?
Data integration platforms are a critical piece of the Data & AI puzzle. I've worked my way through hadoop, cloud (all providors), databricks. Often, a platform is chosen without analysing the business outcomes from the platform. However, from my experience the choices should be made very pragmatically. Decisions of real-time vs batch are also often overlooked. A platform exist to drive business and growth by enabling interoperability between systems at scale. One fit all rarely exists but just best of breed doesn't work. The sweet spot is between foundational platforms and best of breed to address mission critical use-cases and data gouveranance.

Data Mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM) has become essential for improving the competitiveness of businesses and increasing access to knowledge. DMKM still comes up, however, against major scientific and technological obstacles. This European Master in DMKM proposes specialized training in this field.
Since 2015 the consortium is composed of five universities from three countries: France (University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6, University of Lyon Lumière Lyon 2, Polytec’Nantes)…Data Mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM) has become essential for improving the competitiveness of businesses and increasing access to knowledge. DMKM still comes up, however, against major scientific and technological obstacles. This European Master in DMKM proposes specialized training in this field.
Since 2015 the consortium is composed of five universities from three countries: France (University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6, University of Lyon Lumière Lyon 2, Polytec’Nantes), Italy (University of East Piedmont) and Spain (Technical University of Catalonia). The Master in DMKM is based on experience in multi-site teaching gained from the Master’s degree in Knowledge Extraction from Data, which has been running since 1999 within three members of the consortium.
The Master in DMKM is aimed at students from all over the world. Admission is granted on the basis of a selection procedure. -
