dumbass Lyrics
You ready?
No
[Verse 1]
I do this thing where I close off
My feelings and I take my clothes off
So I don't have to open up to my boyfriend
I told my friends that I'm fine
But really, I'm losin' my mind
They're drinkin', I'm thinkin' too much
So I avoid them
[Pre-Chorus]
Suckin' in my stomach
Side effects of fittin' in
Don't cut my hair 'cause I'm scared
God forbid I have my own opinion
[Chorus]
It's my fear of looking like a dumbass
Sayin' somethin' that I shouldn't have
It's holdin' me back, holdin' me back, holdin' me back
My fear of never being good enough
So I ignore what I want
It's holdin' me back, holdin' me back
But I'm over that
Over, over, over, over, over
Over that
Over, over, over, over, over
[Verse 2]
I'm overbitin' on my tongue
When people tell me I'm too young
To say all the things that I do in my songs
[Pre-Chorus]
Seventeen over these side effects of fittin' in
I don't know shit, let me live
God forbid I have my own opinion
[Chorus]
It's my fear of looking like a dumbass
Sayin' somethin' that I shouldn't have
It's holdin' me back, holdin' me back, holdin' me back
Holdin' me back
My fear of never being good enough
So I ignore what I want
It's holdin' me back, holdin' me back
[Post-Chorus]
But I'm over that
Over, over, over, over, over
Over that
Over, over, over, over, over
Over that
Over, over, over, over, over
It's my fear of looking like a dumbass
Sayin' somethin' that I shouldn't have
It's holdin' me back, holdin' me back, holdin' me
It's my fear of never being good enough
So I turned into what I'm not
It's holdin' me back, holdin' me back, holdin' me

‘dumbass’ is about my coping mechanisms for my insecurities and how I’m self-aware of it, but trying to ignore it.

I wrote “dumbass” with Jessie Thomas and Grant Averill, both are amazing writers. Granz also produced it. I wanted the production to build over the course of the song to tell the same story the song did. For some odd reason I saw the track as sky blue since day one. The inspiration for the song started with the saying “The fear of looking stupid is holding you back.” I brought that idea into the room and it turned into “dumbass”.

The inspiration for “dumbass” started with the saying ‘the fear of looking stupid is holding you back’. I brought that idea into a songwriting session, and I remember when we came up with the idea of changing it to “dumbass”, it was truly like a lightbulb went off in everyone’s head. I wrote the song with Jessie Thomas and Grant Averill. Grant also produced the song. The truth is, the song is about my coping mechanisms to my insecurities. I wrote “dumbass” at a point in my life where I wasn’t confident in anything I was doing and I realized that my self-doubt was standing in the way of everything.

The music video is really a metaphor for me constantly leaning on something to feel less insecure.
