A cab driver is in critical condition on Friday after police said he was shot in his car near Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza on Thursday night.

NYPD officials said the 52-year-old man was inside a black 2019 Mercedes Benz around 10 p.m. when he was shot in the face in front of 320 Lincoln Place in Prospect Heights – barely a block away from Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum.

Police said he appeared to be a livery car driver, but it was unclear whether he was operating a taxi, an Uber or a Lyft.

First responders took the victim to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and police said his injuries were significant.

Officials did not immediately have any description of a suspect, or any idea of a possible motive.

Police did not identify the man who was shot because he is a surviving victim of a crime.

Shooting incidents have remained relatively stable in the 77th Precinct, which includes Prospect Heights and the northern part of Crown Heights.

Nine incidents were reported in the precinct by this time last year, with the same number reported so far this year – not including Thursday night’s incident, according to police data analyzed by Gothamist.

But the majority of those shootings tend to take place in Crown Heights, and gun violence remains very rare in Prospect Heights.

According to the NYPD’s CompStat map, only one of the shooting incidents from 2023 and 2024 took place in Prospect Heights. It happened on May 25 of this year, several blocks north of where Thursday night’s shooting occurred.

This is a developing story based on information from police and may be updated.
