Nwangwu has taken more reps in training camp than in years past, but he's still a clear third on the depth chart at running back, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. The veteran running back appeared in just nine games last season, dealing with a back injury that landed him on injured reserve early in the 2023 campaign. He had just five carries for 13 yards on offense. He's an impact kick returner when healthy, however. While he's not likely to get many carries behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler, it sounds like he could be next in line should there be an injury.
Tonyan, who was carted off the field during Wednesday's practice session, was diagnosed with back spasms, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Tonyan was down on the field for an extended period of time before being carted off, per Lewis. It appears the tight end has avoided serious injury, though he may be held out of the next few practice sessions until medical staff get a better sense on the severity of the injury. With Tonyan and T.J. Hockenson (knee) both sidelined, Josh Oliver and Johnny Mundt should see some reps with the first-team offense during drills.
Tonyan (undisclosed) was carted off the practice field Wednesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. It remains to be seen what injury or illness Tonyan is dealing with, but we'll consider the tight end day-to-day until further information is available. With T.J. Hockenson still recovering from a knee injury, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt and Tonyan (when available) are candidates to see added snaps and targets for the Vikings out of the gate this season.
Knowles (undisclosed) was spotted on the sidelines of Monday's camp session, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Knowles, an undrafted second-year wide receiver out of Kansas State, had been dealing with an undisclosed injury over the past week. It seems as if he could be nearing a return to the field, and once he does, Knowles is expected to compete for a depth spot in Minnesota's wide receiver corps.
Head coach Kevin O'Connell said Tuesday that Cine is dealing with a lower leg injury and is considered "day-to-day," Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Cine played in just seven regular-season games for the Vikings last season, partially due to a hamstring injury but he was also a healthy scratch for two games. He played eight snaps on defense and 83 snaps on special teams last year and posted one tackle. Cine is battling for a depth spot in the Vikings' secondary.
The Vikings signed Moreau on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. Moreau started in 11 of 16 regular-season games for the Broncos last season, recording 46 tackles (33 solo), seven passes defended and one interception. The 2017 third-round pick out of UCLA brings much-needed depth at corner after Mekhi Blackmon suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury in the first practice of Vikings training camp, while fellow corners Byron Murphy (knee - MCL) and Shaquill Griffin (leg) are also dealing with injuries.
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Tuesday that McCarthy will get more first-team reps later in training camp, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports. Sam Darnold dominated first-team reps throughout the offseason and now into the first week of training camp, making him the favorite to start Week 1 even though McCarthy was drafted 10th overall in April. O'Connell said he'll eventually want McCarthy to get more work with the starters, which also will allow the coaches to see how Darnold looks without WRs Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison to lean on. While fantasy players rightfully are curious about a potential QB battle, it sounds like O'Connell is currently more concerned with installing his offense and making sure all the quarterbacks are capable of running it. Things could get more interesting in August if McCarthy looks especially sharp during practices and/or preseason games.
The Vikings signed McCain on Monday. McCain, who spent his 2023 campaign with the Giants, has found a new home in Minnesota. The nine-year veteran safety played just 19 defensive snaps across 10 appearances in 2023, so he'll likely be competing for a special-teams role ahead of the Vikings' 2024 season.
