Hottest team in area, Revere making its own mark without a Nance: Boys basketball rewind

BEDFORD, Ohio — Revere's best years in boys basketball came with a Nance in the lineup.

Larry Nance Jr. led the school to its best seasons, including a school-record wins in 2011. Pete Nance led the Minutemen to their first regional berth last year.

One is now with the Cavaliers, the other at Northwestern, yet that has not stopped the questions for coach Dean Rahas, who was asked last week at church and even at a birthday party about the season "Nance" is having.

Rahas politely tells them Pete has graduated.

If you're wondering, Revere is doing just fine, too.

Take Tuesday's 71-66 win against Warrensville Heights, which marked a 12th straight victory. Revere has not lost since Dec. 18 at Wadsworth, but none of the previous 11 wins came in the fashion of Tuesday's 21-point comeback.

See how Revere (15-3), ranked 15th in the cleveland.com Top 25, did it in the video above and hear from Warrensville Heights coach Brian Swift and see his team's highlights in the video below. As for the rest of Greater Cleveland, here is a look in this boys basketball rewind.

D.J. DELIVERS AT THE BUZZER

Senior guard D.J. Harrell's near half-court shot beat the buzzer and sent No. 14 East Tech to a 63-62 victory at No. 25 Cleveland Heights.

Harrell and the Scarabs were coming off their Senate League championship victory Friday vs. Rhodes. They trailed Tuesday by nine points entering the fourth quarter.

Harrell finished with 25 points. Johnny Bigsby added 19 points, while Philip Byrd supplied 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Manny Hill led Cleveland Heights with 17 points, while Jae'Lyn Withers added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

FOURTH-QUARTER FURY

Beachwood tuned up for the Division III Garfield Heights District tournament by dismantling the D-I Bulldogs on their home court, 60-43, with a dominant fourth quarter.

Jayson Woodrich finished with 31 points, but not before Beachwood picked apart its hosts with a 26-8 run in the fourth quarter. The Bison trailed by one point entering the final quarter.

Brison Waller led No. 24 Garfield Heights with 22 points.

Beachwood will open tournament play as the fifth seed and play at Kirtland for a chance to return to Garfield Heights for the district semifinals.

SCHMOCK SCORCHES LAWYERS

Joey Schmock scored a career-high 40 points and broke the school record at Holy Name with 10 3-pointers in a 111-65 win vs. John Marshall.

GRANT GOES FOR 44

Lorain senior guard Devon Grant set a school record with 44 points in the second-ranked Titans' 89-71 win vs. Elyria Catholic. Lorain scored 40 points in the first quarter.

Jarred Logan led Elyria Catholic with 20 points and 20 rebounds.

Lorain will be on the road for its final two regular-season games against Lutheran East, Avon and Warrensville Heights. After that, the Titans (18-1) begin the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the Division I Elyria Catholic District with their sights set on a run back to Columbus.

CARDINALS CLINCH GCC

Luke Floriea scored 18 points, Mason Trubisky added 14 and No. 4 Mentor pushed past No. 11 Euclid on the road for a 64-53 victory that clinched the outright Greater Cleveland Conference title.

Mentor's win combined with No. 10 Shaker Heights' 62-52 home loss against Solon wrapped up the championship.

WHAT TO WATCH WEDNESDAY

WHAT TO WATCH THURSDAY

Perry (13-4) at Harvey (13-4): Dave Wojciechowski's Red Raiders lead the Chagrin Valley Conference's Chagrin Division, but they suffered a 68-65 loss on Jan. 22 at Perry.

WHAT TO WATCH FRIDAY

No. 5 St. Edward (12-6) at No. 1 St. Vincent-St. Mary (13-3): Two evenly matched teams, St. Edward and STVM renew acquaintances in Akron. They can meet again, but only if they reach Columbus. St. Edward is looking to bounce back from a 65-53 loss last week at rival St. Ignatius, while this begins a big weekend for the Fighting Irish. They entertain No. 3 Brush on Sunday.

No. 2 Lorain (18-1) at No. 13 Lutheran East (11-7): Lorain has the Lake Erie League championship locked up, but bragging rights are at stake with Lutheran East leaving the league this year. Lorain senior guard Devon Grant set a school record Tuesday with 44 points in an 89-71 home win on senior night vs. Elyria Catholic.

No. 12 Willoughby South (16-4) at No. 3 Brush (17-2): Before that Sunday matchup for Brush, it must stave off Willoughby South for what should determine the Western Reserve Conference championship. John Hugley scored 25 points and D.J. Dial added 20 on Tuesday in a win at Kenston.

No. 7 Villa Angela-St. Joseph (13-4) at Benedictine (9-9): The Bengals are struggling, but a win vs. North Coast League frontrunner VASJ could do wonders before the postseason. VASJ won last time, 95-83 in overtime. The Vikings have won nine of their last 11.

No. 8 Archbishop Hoban (14-4) at Cleveland Central Catholic (11-8): Hoban won convincingly last time, 65-44, in Akron. Can the Ironmen turn the tables with Hoban having to make the drive north?

No. 21 Fairview (18-2) at Clearview (14-5): Both teams are 13-1 in the Patriot Athletic Conference, looking for the last Stripes Division title. Fairview moves to the Great Lakes Conference next year. The Warriors topped the Clippers, 82-62, on Jan. 4.

Rocky River (13-5) at Elyria Catholic (10-8): The Panthers are clinging to the GLC lead by a game over Bay and Holy Name, which meet next week.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND

No. 23 Bay (15-4) at Lakewood (12-6), Saturday: A contrast in styles, Lakewood likes to utilize its length while Bay wants to push the pace with its guards. The Rockets take the short trip on I-90 for Lakewood's senior night.

No. 3 Brush (17-2) at No. 1 St. Vincent-St. Mary (13-3), Sunday: Originally scheduled for earlier in January, this matchup was created because both teams had openings from December cancellations. No more delays.
