Shaker Heights heating up; Brush-STVM showdown frozen till February: Boys basketball rewind

MENTOR, Ohio — Temperatures plummeted Tuesday night in Mentor and around Northeast Ohio.

The cold has not kept Shaker Heights from heating up, though.

Shammah Scott scored 22 points, including the go-ahead jumper in a 69-66 win that handed Mentor its first loss of the season. Shaker, ranked 12th in the cleveland.com Top 25, has won 10 of its last 11 games.

Additionally, Dakota Cochran added 16 points with 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Red Raiders (11-4).

WAITING GAME

Wednesday's school closings because of cold temperatures, including St. Vincent-St. Mary, means the No. 1 STVM vs. No. 3 Brush showdown will have to wait.

The game will be played Sunday, Feb. 17 with a 5 p.m. tipoff, Brush coach Chet Mason said.

This matchup already was a late addition to the schedule, as both teams had cancellations in the last month that created openings. Top-ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary is still slated to travel later this week to Kennedy Catholic, which handed Brush a 70-65 loss Sunday.

LESSONS IN A FIRST LOSS?

A big week still remains for Mentor, which suffered its first loss in 13 games.

The Cardinals travel Friday to Mentor and host Lakota East on Saturday. East pushed Cincinnati Moeller more than any team in the state. It will provide a stern test.

Coach Bob Krizancic assessed his Cardinals on Tuesday night. Check it out below.

ELLER GOES FOR 36

Lake Catholic junior Luka Eller scored 36 points, which his Cougars needed to leave No. 22 Holy Name with a 77-72 win.

No. 9 Lake Catholic (12-2) rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit in the non-conference matchup and snapped the Green Wave's 10-game win streak.

Junior guard Luke Frazier added 18 points and Chris DeMitro added 16. Quentin Richardson led Holy Name (12-3) with 20 points.

NO MORE SHARING?

Olmsted Falls and Lakewood shared last year's Southwestern Conference championship. Falls does not appear to be in the mood this time.

The 11th-ranked Bulldogs took the lead in the second quarter, then pulled away in the fourth to earn a 57-44 win at home. They avenged a four-point loss earlier this season at Lakewood, and sit alone in first place in the SWC.

Senior guard Eric Hanna score 13 points, while Ryan Higginbotham had 12 and Michael Fritz added 11 for Falls, which controls its own destiny for an outright conference title.

100 FOR SHETZER

Bay eclipsed Clearview with an 81-71 win that gave coach Jared Shetzer his 100th career victory.

The Rockets (13-3) jumped out to a big lead and held a 15-point advantage entering the fourth quarter. Erik Painter scored 17 points, while Max Showalter added 16. Jack Maxwell and Christian Dupps each scored 15 points.

Javon Todd paced Clearview with 19 points.

SWEEPS WEEK

Nigel Martin and Jae'Lyn Withers combined for 61 points, and No. 24 Cleveland Heights toppled No. 8 Lutheran East for the second time this season.

Martin scored 31 points and Withers had 30 in an 86-72 win. The Tigers beat Lutheran East by four the last time they played and snapped a two-game losing streak.

Heights (8-6) lost three of its last four games, which made this a critical victory against a Lake Erie League rival.

Euclid also can boast about its sweep, using a 91-76 home victory against Solon to beat the Comets for a second time.

Mario Lacy Jr. scored 28 points, Garvin Clarke had 21 and Latrayl Alexander added 16. Coach T.J. Kwasniak told the News-Herald it's the best this team has played in his two seasons as coach.

Euclid (9-5) has won five straight and heads Friday to Shaker, which has won eight in a row.

WHAT TO WATCH FRIDAY

No. 21 Cleveland Central Catholic (9-7) at No. 6 Villa Angela-St. Joseph (11-3): Both North Coast League Red Division teams are off until Friday night. The Ironmen still seek their first division win, while VASJ has won each of them by a possession or in overtime, such as their last meeting at CCC. Babe Kwasniak's Vikings did not lead Friday until the final second during their 76-74 win at Archbishop Hoban.

No. 8 Lutheran East (9-5) at No. 5 St. Edward (10-5): Both programs with chances to make it to Columbus in their respective divisions had the chance to play SPIRE last weekend. Both had their moments, from St. Edward's stellar start Saturday to E.J. Farmer's 37-point burst Sunday for Lutheran East.

No. 7 Archbishop Hoban (9-3) at No. 16 Benedictine (8-6): Hoban won last time in Akron, as the Bengals were without coach Rob Stircula while he battled an illness. Hoban coach T.K. Griffith said Friday after a two-point loss to VASJ that he expects neither Benedictine nor Central Catholic to be "very happy" when his Knights come to Cleveland for visits. Hoban won both of those matchups at home the first time around the NCL schedule.

No. 22 Holy Name (12-3) at Elyria Catholic (8-6): Holy Name had been on a roll before Lake Catholic snapped its 10-game win streak on Tuesday. That does not affect Great Lakes Conference standing, as Holy Name visits the Coliseum in Elyria trailing the Panthers by a game for first place.

No. 10 Copley (12-2) at Revere (11-3): First place in the Suburban League's American Division is on the line. Both teams have eight-game winning streaks. D.J. Jones' 17 points led Copley on Tuesday during a 65-53 win against Massillon Jackson in a rematch of last year's regional semifinals.

No. 25 Twinsburg (12-3) at Brecksville (11-3): Both Suburban League divisions will have first place up for grabs. Senior Kenny Ganley and the Bees have caught fire with a seven-game win streak that has catapulted them ahead in the National Division. Twinsburg, meanwhile, has struggled with two losses in its last three games. The Tigers broke their skid Tuesday as Ralph Campbell scored 27 points in a 66-57 win at Aurora.

WHAT TO WATCH SATURDAY

No. 1 St. Vincent-St. Mary (11-2) at Kennedy Catholic: Three-time defending Pennsylvania state champion Kennedy Catholic is 2-1 against Northeast Ohio teams, including a split against St. Edward. It just beat Brush at Sunday's Chet Mason Invitational.

Garfield Heights (8-8) at No. 2 Lorain (13-1): Next season, this will be a Lake Erie League matchup. Garfield Heights has improved with sophomore guard Demetrius "Meechie" Johnson Jr. and freshman Sonny Johnson, but they face an experienced squad at Lorain, led by Mr. Basketball candidate Devon Grant.

Lakota East at No. 4 Mentor (12-1): Lakota East is the only team to remain within single digits of undefeated defending state champ Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller.

No. 5 St. Edward (10-5) at No. 21 Cleveland Central Catholic (9-7): Both teams will be coming off tough matchups on Friday.

No. 15 Warrensville Heights (10-5) at Buchtel (9-6): The Griffins lost a two-point game last week to Garfield Heights and will entertain another talented Cleveland-area squad in Akron.

No. 16 Benedictine (8-6) at No. 20 St. Ignatius (8-6): Will Benedictine have tired legs following its matchup the previous night vs. VASJ?
