Jarritt Goode (Benedictine High School)
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Benedictine has a new football coach, as it is turning to 1995 graduate Jarritt Goode to lead its program.
The school made the decision official Wednesday.
Goode's older brothers, John and Frank, also attended the school.
"Along with our mother and father, Benedictine has been important to me and my brothers and generations of our family," Goode said in a release provided Thursday by the school. "It is woven into our history."
He also has four nephews who played at Benedictine, the most recent being William Cloud in 2011.
Goode replaces Carter Welo, a St. Ignatius grad who did not have his contract renewed after three seasons. The Bengals are coming off a 4-6 season. They finished 13-18 during that stretch, which included a playoff appearance in 2017. Welo arrived at Benedictine after serving as an assistant at Notre Dame College.
He took over at Benedictine just before the program moved up to Division II because of the OHSAA's competitive balance initiative. In fact, Benedictine has steadily moved up from Division IV after its state championship run in 2014.
Goode knows something about deep playoff runs at Benedictine.
As a senior, he helped the Bengals to a state semifinal run as an All-Ohio linebacker. Goode returned to the football program last year as a defensive line coach. He also is the Dean of Men at Benedictine.
"I'm really happy that Jarritt Goode is heading up our football program," athletic director Marty Hyland said. "When he was a student, and now as a coach, he showed great leadership abilities."
Goode went on to play at Youngstown State, helping the Penguins to a 1997 national championship under Jim Tressel.
He now takes over a Benedictine program two of the area's top quarterbacks and punters in Nick Demchuk and Billy Boehlke. Demchuk, a three-year starter at quarterback, threw for 2,404 yards and 25 touchdowns last fall.

Junior receiver Charles Rosser caught a team-high 42 passes for 783 yards and nine touchdowns. Sophomore Chris Gales stretched defenses for 879 yards and eight TDs on 35 receptions. The defense also should bring back more experience at linebacker.
Entering last season, Welo said he was excited about the upcoming sophomore class.
That should continue as juniors under Goode.
