Hathaway Brown's Nicole Gillinov, Magnificat's Anna Roggenburk repeat as girls tennis state champions

MASON, Ohio — Hathaway Brown's trip to the 2018 OHSAA Division II state girls tennis tournament ended almost the exact same way the 2017 tournament did.

The Blazers had the state champion in both singles and doubles on Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. In a rematch of last year's final match, Nicole Gillinov defended her state championship by defeating Sydni Ratliff of Gahanna Columbus Academy, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Gillinov had only dropped three games in the state tournament prior to her championship match against Ratliff. She defeated Orange's Blessing Nwaozuzu, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.

Ratliff beat West Geauga freshman Rylie Hanford, 6-3, 6-0, in the other semifinal. Hanford came back to beat Nwaozuzu, 6-3, 6-4, to win third place.

The doubles championship featured Hathaway Brown's two doubles teams as seniors Isabella Daverio and Rebecca Wolf played junior Isabella Godsick and junior Megan Qiang, who won the title last year. Daverio and Wolf won in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Senior Amy Lazbin and freshman Morgan Dobos of Revere, who lost to Godsick and Qiang in the semifinals. They finished fourth, losing in the third-place match to Toledo Central Catholic's Ava McQuillin and Maverick Delp, 6-1, 6-0.

DIVISION I

Like Gillinov, Magnificat senior Anna Roggenburk came to Mason trying to defend her state championship. And like Gillinov, Roggenburk did just that.

She defeated Kelli Niehaus of Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-0, in the championship match. She won each of her four matches in the state tournament in straight sets.

Roggenburk's teammate, junior Olivia Rondini, defeated Westlake senior Emma Peeler, 6-3, 6-0, to win third place.

In doubles, Mayfield sophomore Hannah Kassale and junior Caitlyn Hsu lost in the final match to Olentangy Liberty's Danielle Schoenly and Maddie Atway, 6-2, 6-3.
