Stow freshman Julia Martin wins D-I state bowling title

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Stow freshman Jullia Martin won the Division I Girls State Bowling Championships Friday at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl.

Martin bowled a 668 series to win the title by four pins over second place Kailey Bonnwell of Massillon Jackson. Martin opened with a 265 in the first game and followed up with games of 213 and 190. Bonnwell rolled games of 196, 248 and 220.

Also earning All-Ohio honors were Huber Heights Wayne junior Keirsten Schooler, Columbus Briggs junior Dakota Fink and Cincinnati Briggs junior Ali Breig.

Martin helped the Bulldogs to the top seed in the championship round. Stow bowled series of 975, 974 and 845 in the qualifying round to earn the top seed but Bulldogs were defeated by eventual state champion Centerville in the semifinal round. Stow senior Hayley Roberts rolled an 581 series and finished eighth overall.

Centerville defeated Beavercreek to win the title. Stow finished as a team in third place.

North Canton Hoover finished fourth as a team. The Vikings earned the third seed with games of 812, 899 and 935. Senior Erin Hold led the team with 599 series that was good for seventh in the state. Hoover seniors Mariah Ritchey and Becca Glatz finished 19th and 20th in the state.

Massillon Perry qualified for the championship but lost was eliminated by Stow. Junior Sarah Benedict had a 577 series and earned 11th in the state.

Avon Lake finished 14th in the state while Akron Ellet was 16th. Avon Lake junior Amber Warthman finished 22nd.
