  • The Asia-Europe market news is still dominated by the Red Sea crisis as well as the alliance between Maersk and Hapag Lloyd.   1. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd Operational Cooperation:   The strategic move of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd entering into an operational cooperation called Gemini Cooperation will impact the EUR trade lane. THE Alliance carriers are working hard to alleviate and address customer concerns following Hapag’s recent decision.   Analysts suggest that the remaining members of THE Alliance are considering inviting Wan Hai from Taiwan or persuading a partner from the Ocean Alliance to join. However, these scenarios are still speculative at this point.   2. Red Sea Situation:   All major shipping lines, including the 2M/OA/THE alliances, are now opting for the Cape of Good Hope route over the Suez Canal. This decision remains in effect until further notice. It is expected that the current situation will remain unchanged for at least 6-12 months.   Interestingly, Chinese shipping lines like CULines and Fujian Huahui Shipping are adapting to the Red Sea situation by redeploying vessels to serve critical ports such as Doraleh, Hodeidah, and Jeddah.   Hapag Lloyd has started an innovative land service from Jebel Ali/ Dammam/ Jubail to Jeddah. Containers would in effect be unloaded before vessels reach the Red Sea area and would then be loaded on vessels higher up in the Red Sea, bypassing the critical area that is affected by the Houthi’s attacks.   Additionally, the surge in shipments during the Chinese New Year is also putting pressure on rates. It remains to be seen how rates will adjust once shipping slows down after the Chinese New Year. We will be keeping an eye on this and will inform you once we have more details.   Please feel free to reach out to our team at [email protected] in case there is anything we can assist with.

  • The situation in the Red Sea has significantly disrupted the freight industry. The below infographic clearly shows that the route around the Cape of Good Hope is much longer than the Suez Canal route. As a result, transit times for Asia-Europe lanes will increase. This longer route also has a negative impact on the carbon footprint of shipping. Additionally, due to the rerouting, there will be a decrease in capacity on all trade lanes as more vessels are required for the Asia-Europe trade. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of containers in Asia that is affecting all trade lanes. These containers are stuck on the Asia-Europe vessels for longer periods, which has led to a container shortage in Asia. Moreover, the Panama Canal is experiencing delays on the transpacific lanes due to low water levels caused by drought. This, in combination with the aforementioned effects, is causing a lack of capacity and rate increases on the transpacific lanes. Consequently, we anticipate a higher demand for airfreight. Concerning the Asia-Europe lanes, we are observing a resurgence in the use of sea-air products via the Middle East and rail products from China to Europe due to this situation. Specifically regarding the transpacific lanes, we expect that more cargo will be sent to the west coast for transloading to the US Midwest due to the current situation. On the plus side, Chinese New Year (Feb 10-15) will lead to a temporary decrease in demand for shipping from China, which may alleviate some of these effects. Here are the anticipated effects of the current situation "in a nutshell": - Longer transit times for Asia-Europe - Generally higher rates on all lanes due to capacity issues - Container shortage in Asia - Increased shipping the US West Coast due to Panama Canal issues - Increased volume of transloads from the West Coast to IPI destinations - Increased airfreight volumes for Asia-Europe and Transpacific - Increased demand for Asia-Europe sea-air and rail solutions More info on: https://lnkd.in/gu5BhhWi
