Congratulations to my friend Julia Kelly on being named the lead Public Defender for the newly established Office of the Public Defender. As the department director, Kelly will lead the office in providing legal representation to indigent adults facing criminal charges within the county. Kelly extensive experience and deep commitment to serving indigent communities make her the perfect choice to lead the Office of the Public Defender. I look forward to working with Kelly and her team to make sure they have the support and state resources from the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission to ensure every Michigander has access to justice. ... It’s Back to School Day! Congratulations to all the students and parents out there. You got this!

Along with my @MiHouseDems colleagues, I’m committed to ensuring every student has a strong start. With increased classroom funding, free breakfasts and lunches, expanded free pre-K, and more affordable college, we're paving the way for a bright future for all Michiganders.

State Representative Tim Sneller was a good man who fiercely loved his community and the people in his life. He was always quick with a joke, helpful with advice, and sincere in his efforts to do the right thing. We were both once legislative staffers and that built a bond between us. He was so proud to see me get elected. I was looking forward to watching him win his election this year, so we could serve together in the House. In politics, there is always someone ready to backstab or grab unearned glory. Tim was one of the rare good people. He will be missed.Today, the flag flies at half-staff for former Representative Tim Sneller, who passed away earlier last month. Rep. Sneller was more than an elected official, he was a staple in the Michigan legislature and a warm-hearted friend to all. He is sorely missed. ... See MoreSee Less

I’m thrilled to announce that the recently passed Fiscal Year 2025 budget for Michigan K-12 schools includes significant funding increases for our state's students, teachers, and schools!

On average, the budget boosts per-pupil funding by $397.23 per student. However, the effects differ across school districts based on their individual payroll budget allocations.

Here are the breakdowns for our schools in House District 80:

Grand Rapids Public Schools: $5,760,449 or $420.94/pupil (4.38% increase)

East Grand Rapids Public Schools: $994,698 or $338.75/pupil (3.53% increase)

Forest Hills Public Schools: $3,709,267 or $408.66/pupil (4.25% increase);

Kentwood Public Schools: $3,894,177 or $417.37/pupil (4.34% increase);

Supporting Michigan students and educators has always been a top priority for Democrats, and this budget reflects our commitment to enhancing education and providing the necessary resources for our schools to thrive. I'm grateful we successfully implemented these changes, which not only ensure more money goes into the pockets of our hardworking teachers but also significantly invest in our children's future.

Thank you for your commitment to our students and schools!

Earlier this week, my Democratic colleagues and I passed the final state budget for the 2024/25 fiscal year, prioritizing strategic investments in our communities. This budget is all about putting people first and making Michigan a place where families can thrive. I’m proud to share that this budget is a testament to House Democrat’s commitment to investing in the people of Michigan and their hometowns. From education to infrastructure, this budget focuses on building a brighter future in Michigan.

Education: 🎓 Increased support for K-12 schools, including resources for teacher development, free meals for students, technology integration, and expanded pre-K access.

Affordable Housing: 🏠 Investments in constructing more affordable housing, fostering vibrant communities and addressing housing needs statewide

Infrastructure: 🛣️ Funding for critical road and bridge repairs, enhancing public transit systems, and supporting clean water initiatives.

Public Safety: 🚔 Resources for law enforcement training, equipment upgrades, and community-based violence prevention programs

Health: 🏥 Expanded funding for mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and initiatives to reduce healthcare disparities.

Environment: 🌿 Investments in sustainable agriculture, conservation programs, and renewable energy infrastructure.

Economy: 💼 Grants and tax incentives to promote business growth, workforce training programs, and initiatives to attract new industries to Michigan.

Notable wins for our district include major investments in mental health services, affordable housing, support for veterans, local arts, and workforce development. I am especially excited about the $2 million allocated to the Grand Rapids Ford International Airport.

This budget prioritizes community prosperity, health, housing and education. We're investing in strong, vibrant communities that people are proud to call home. This budget puts people over politics, delivering resources to strengthen our schools, neighborhoods and main street economies.
