The EU is losing ground to China domestically and around the world China distinctly dominates trade with emerging countries. According to a recent report, Chinese trade with developing countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa has increased by almost 50% since 2019. Not only does this put the Chinese ahead of the US and EU, but they also seem to be expanding at the expense of the EU: as the EU's share has declined, the Chinese have increased their role in emerging regions. The European industry has plenty of reasons to fear China, as not only is it being squeezed out of more and more European markets, but it is doing the same in the global market. However, Europe's leading economies can't put aside their short-term considerations regarding stopping the Chinese takeover.

Turnaround in the car market The German industry's loss of ground to China is particularly evident in the automotive sector. Chinese push in the electric car sector and the gradual decline of the big European, mainly German, manufacturers are slowly changing the direction of automotive trade between China and Europe. While German car manufacturers have been supplying the Chinese market for years, by 2023, there has been a dramatic drop in the volume of car exports to China. Meanwhile, as Europe imports more and more electric cars from China, Europe's external trade balance in automobiles has begun to deteriorate dramatically. There is a growing recognition in Europe of the risks of China's automotive advance, and there is no question that the EU needs to act.
