Every minute, hepatitis B and C claim 8 lives, contributing to a staggering 1.3 million deaths each year. Despite progress in prevention, too many people remain undiagnosed, allowing the virus to silently cause severe health issues like cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis is often asymptomatic, with 80% of Hepatitis C and 90% of Hepatitis B infections going undiagnosed globally. This silent epidemic is compounded by low awareness among the public and even some healthcare providers, as well as stigma and discrimination that keep people from seeking the care they need. But early detection through diagnostic screening is our first line of defense. A timely diagnosis opens the door to appropriate and potentially life-saving treatments, reducing the risk of chronic disease and preventing the spread of the virus. At Roche, we believe that everyone deserves to get tested. It doesn’t matter who you are or how you contracted hepatitis, everyone deserves access to the tools that can save lives. We're thrilled to announce the start of the Master's Program in Nursing at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), now integrated with the Cancer Patient Navigator (CPN) competency. This program, developed in collaboration with Tata Memorial Centre, RS Kanker Dharmais, RS Sardjito, and Roche, is set to empower the next generation of nurses with the skills needed to navigate cancer patients throughout their treatment journey. With 48 students already enrolled, we are optimistic that this pioneering curriculum will enhance the quality of cancer care across Indonesia. Hepatitis is more than just a liver disease – it’s a significant public health challenge that can lead to severe and potentially fatal complications. In Indonesia, Hepatitis B and C are especially alarming. According to recent data, Indonesia ranks fourth in Southeast Asia for liver disease-related cases and deaths. Despite efforts, many people with hepatitis remain undiagnosed and untreated, heightening the risk of complications such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. In 2024, over 42,000 Indonesians tested positive for Hepatitis C antibodies, but only a fraction received further diagnosis and treatment. Hepatitis B also remains a concern, particularly among high-risk groups like healthcare workers and pregnant women, where screening efforts are being intensified. Early detection through testing is crucial for effective treatment and prevention. By spreading awareness and encouraging testing, we can work together to mitigate the impact of hepatitis in Indonesia and improve public health outcomes. PT Roche Indonesia, Diagnostics Division, proudly took part in the 21st year of the Roche Children’s Walk, a lasting tradition that unites us in supporting children’s philanthropic projects around the world. Over the past three months, our employees demonstrated incredible creativity and dedication in their fundraising efforts, organizing a variety of activities such as charity auctions, bazaar, sporting challenges, talent show, book and a blood donation drive. This hard work and enthusiasm resulted in a remarkable total of IDR 239,563,342 raised. This year, we were honored to support Sahabat Anak as our beneficiary, a dedicated organization providing education and care to marginal children in Jakarta, helping them reach their full potential. The culmination of these efforts was last Friday’s peak event, where more than 100 people came together for a day filled with joy, connection, and hope for a brighter future. We are delighted to share the success of the Indonesia Blood Service User Meeting, held in Surakarta from July 10-12, 2024.
