Whales are gentle mammals of the ocean, but their importance goes far beyond their size. They play a crucial role in keeping our marine ecosystems healthy in two key ways: Maintaining the Food Chain: Whales, depending on the species, act as both predators and prey. They keep prey populations like fish in check, preventing them from overgrazing on vital resources. At the same time, their waste fertilizes the ocean, promoting the growth of phytoplankton, the base of the marine food chain. Combating Climate Change: Whales store massive amounts of carbon in their bodies. When they die and sink to the ocean floor, this carbon gets locked away for millennia. This helps regulate atmospheric CO2 levels, mitigating climate change. Let's celebrate #WorldOceanDay by protecting these gentle mammals and their watery home!
