Hello Everyone ,

I recently attended a seminar organized by a mutual-help group that I am part of. I spoke on various things that I thought would benefit the youngsters in the Industry I am working in. I went on and on telling them how can we help each other with respect to the abundant knowledge each person has in his/her own horizon.

It was an amazing platform where the newbies in the industry are so active and are responsible enough to understand what is their responsibility towards the society and specially the mutual-help group. We appreciated the idea behind the formation of this community and the minds behind it.

After I went on and on ranting about how the organizations are transforming into fully automation driven places, I was a little closer to convince the group how important automation is. With which one of the person in the group expressed his interest in sharing his success story. Write back to me, if you crib about not being where you are and worried about the age.

Mr. XYZ once was a part of Senior Management of HMT (Hindustan Machine Tools) Ltd., which is a state owned manufacturing company. He served the company for a complete 24 years of tenure. At the end of 24 years, he was fired by the company. At that point in time, he was 45 years old. He was enough confident and thought, "let anything strike but I will be that employee who'll never be fired even until the last day of its functioning." But the fate had something else planned for him. After resigning from the company, he absolutely had no idea of his future/career/family. He was looked down upon by any and everyone. At that point he decided to start his career as fresher in Software Industry. He enrolled himself for a course in Software Testing. His first interview was held at Cafe Coffee Day. The manager was hesitant to hire him, as he was a senior person. He still let him take up this job. And there was no looking back.

Fast forward 13 years, after being in the software testing job in the same company for 13 years, the company shut down. He was once again left with nothing. This time, with the lesson for life that regular learning is the only constant that will help anyone survive. This time he took up automation courses both at day classes and online learning portals. This zeal was the only thing that kept him going. Everyone looked down upon him again. He was slowly losing all the respect for all the experiments he was doing. One fine day, while he was at a bakery he happened to see a start-up on the first floor. He requested 10 mins of the Boss's time in a very subtle way. Requested for an opportunity, if any. In another 10 mins he shared his resume. He even convinced them to give him 3 months of time to entirely change the testing wing of the company without any pay. The company hesitated to only think, they cannot afford to recruit him. Still he was offered a job. Now after 3 months he is doing great wherever he is. As part of daily learning, he still takes up online courses to keep up with the fast paced industry.

At 58, he is a happy person who is learning a new tool/technology every now and then. That still makes me go wow all over again. An inspiration. All I can say is "Age is just a number"
