First, Samsung teased the Galaxy Ring at Unpacked last month, and today, at the Mobile World Conference (MWC 2024), Samsung has finally provided more details on its health-centric finger accessory.

Set to hit shelves later this year

The Galaxy Ring does not mark Samsung’s foray into the realm of wearable health technology; it already has a line of watches that monitor your heart rate and tell you how many hours of REM sleep you got the previous night.

Samsung is marketing the ring as a sleek yet functional accessory to enhance people’s wellness journey. Will it just be another robust contender in the wearable market that already has the Oura ring?

Health metrics around the clock

The ring’s size is indeed reminiscent of its competitor, the Oura ring, but it is a bit wider in circumference, presumably so that Samsung’s offering could pack a punch with a suite of sensors housed within its compact frame.

Despite its dainty appearance, early impressions suggest that the Galaxy Ring would be lightweight, promising comfort for extended wear. Wearing a ring at night is more comfortable than wearing a chunky watch.

“Smallest form for comfortable 24/7 wear”

Available in sizes ranging from 5 to 13, denoted by S through XL markings, Samsung ensures a tailored fit for users of all sizes. Battery capacity varies depending on size, offering a range of 14.5mAh to 21.5mAh, though specifics on battery life remain elusive, reported The Verge.

Vice President of Digital Health at Samsung, Dr Hon Pak, wrote in a blog, “As a new addition to our wearables portfolio, Galaxy Ring will offer users an all-new way to simplify everyday wellness, empowering them with greater insights and more ways to understand themselves day and night.”

“With Galaxy Ring, users can embrace an unrivaled experience during every step of their wellness journey, all while being delivered in lockstep with Samsung’s broader vision for a more connected, integrated and seamless digital wellness platform,” added Dr. Pak.

Dr Pak continued to shed light on the Galaxy Ring’s capabilities, revealing its prowess in sleep tracking based on heart rate, movement, and breathing patterns.

The Galaxy Ring will also have a novel feature called ‘My Vitality Score,’ designed to gauge users’ alertness levels and provide personalized feedback through ‘Booster Cards.’

While Samsung remains tight-lipped on exact details such as pricing and availability, time will tell if the Galaxy Ring will splash in the wearables market.

However, its limited compatibility with Samsung Galaxy phones raises questions about inclusivity, with plans for broader Android compatibility and potential iOS integration still under consideration.
