Mustard lockers are made for home, work and play.

"We design our pieces to be versatile, and to last through many different eras of your life," says Co-Founder and Creative Director Becca Stern. "It's always front of mind when we're adding a new locker to the family – how many different ways can we use this? We hope that when someone chooses a Mustard design, that they're choosing something they can keep for years to come, even as their needs change or their style evolves. They have a timeless quality and they're built to last."

There’s more than one way to

Four doors, four ways

The idea for The Standard may have been sparked by a TV unit, but she’s a whole lot more than that. Let’s look at some of our favourite ways to style our newest locker, however you use it.

Living

The Standard is the ultimate TV unit or media console. Store your record player and vinyl collection in style, keep your tech hub tidy with the handy cable holes inside, and add some mood lighting on top for the finishing touch.

Dining

Add showstopping storage to your kitchen and dining area! The Standard will keep your glassware and china safely stashed away, with room on top for your special styling pieces and recipe books. Your dinner parties just got a glow-up!

Playing

Kids clutter, you've met your match. Practice tidy-up time by popping toys and trinkets inside, while the top makes for the perfect play surface for little people (they can even reach all by themselves!) Lockable doors keep your breakables safe, too.

Organising

Hallways, mudrooms and entryways get a deluxe decluttering with The Standard. Tuck away bags and umbrellas and keep your floors clear of mess. Store shoes out of sight, and use the top to drop your keys, wallet and essentials as you come and go.

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW

There’s one question we’re asked more than any other: ‘how on earth am I meant to choose a colour?’

With twelve beautiful shades in the Mustard rainbow, we know we don't make it easy. So, when it came time to plan our Pride celebrations this year, we decided to take on our most ambitious project yet.

Meet The Rainbow Standard, a super duper limited edition release, featuring every Mustard colour in one beautiful longline locker.

When we say limited edition, we mean it: there are only 70 in production globally.

A vital symbol of Pride, the rainbow is an emblem of the LGBTIQ+ community. We created this very special piece to give back to that community, so we're donating 50% of sales from every Rainbow Standard to the charity Outright International.

To give this colourful creation the debut she deserves, we paired up with the internet's favourite maximalists, @joshandmattdesign, to talk personal style, evolution, and identity.

Lots of love

Ask Josh and Matt to describe their style, and you'll get a description that sounds somewhere between a magical theme park and Willy Wonka's personal playground. "It's a technicolour rollercoaster," they agree. With their eclectic wonderland home – there's a conversation pit lined with aquariums, a giant nose above the bed, a kaleidoscope of lighting – it's surprising to hear that just four years ago, the pair lived in an apartment with a neutral colour scheme.

"We've always dressed colourfully, but we didn't start putting colour into our home until we were in lockdown," Josh explains.

"We were stuck at home, and we realised that the white walls, grey couch, everything black and grey, was making us crazy. We needed colour in the house to survive lockdown! And that's how it started."

They invested in a set of blue dining chairs first. "We thought we were so brave!" Josh laughs. "We just decided to do what we wanted to do, and we started sharing it. It turned out that a lot more people were willing to be part of that journey than we realised!"

With over four million followers amassed across both Instagram and TikTok, that feels like the understatement of the century.

A business naturally followed. Josh & Matt Design grew out of the duo's desire to create renter-friendly home decor pieces. But the pair's style evolution was an organic one. "We did lot of upcycling to develop our style," Matt says. "A lot of the stuff we buy is second-hand, so it’s not something we can necessarily plan. We see the object and then think about where it might fit in our home."

Josh thinks that free-flowing approach is part of the magic. "The interior world can tell you that you need to have a solid plan before you start anything. But for us, it's more 'work it out as you go.' You know, we could have never planned having a giant nose above the bed! That's the fun in it. I feel like we are led by the energy of an object."

The iconic nose almost didn't make it to pride of place above their bed – it took some serious convincing for Matt to agree to bring it home! But Josh employed their ethos to get him across the line: "We aren't afraid to fail," he says. "If we don't like it, or it's a mistake, then we just change it up. No one stays the same, so why should your home stay the same?"

The ultimate test, according to Matt, is whether the pair can envision a piece fitting into their lives forever. "We have a very longterm mindset. If we're buying something, we're imagining that we're going to be keeping it for our lifetime."

Josh adds, "Yeah, we're going to have the best estate sale ever. People are going to be so excited for us to die!"

They've got a lot of living to do first, though. Josh and Matt are planning their wedding, and preparing to launch an incense and home fragrance range. "It's still very early stages," says Josh. "We want to disrupt the industry, and we've got some quirky ideas, so watch this space!

50% of sales will go to

Outright International

Next up, they're bringing The Rainbow Standard home with them – and they've already got the perfect spot picked out. This colourful creation feels custom-made for Josh and Matt's personality-packed home, but it represents something deeper too.

"It wasn't easy for us, first starting out and being our authentic selves," Josh explains. "We still struggle with it, I mean we don't really do PDA. That's why organisations like Outright International are so important, to help the next generation and all members of the LGBTIQ+ community to be who they are, and create a safe space. We're all about authenticity and reflecting yourself in the home, and you need to start with being comfortable with who you are first before you can do that."

The pair's signature sign-off, 'lots of love,' takes on a whole new meaning when you put it like that.

THE PERFECT FIT

We catch up with Mustard's Product Designer Kate to discover how our newest locker came to life.

What was the inspiration behind The Standard?

We already had The Lowdown, which is perfectly proportioned to work as a TV unit in alcoves and smaller rooms. When our co-founder Jess put two Lowdowns next to each other in her home, with her TV above it, it got her and Becca thinking — we need a wider locker!

We decided we were missing a longer locker that would suit larger spaces and bigger TVs. That was where I came in!

What was the design process like?

We initially designed The Standard to be a little taller than it is now. When I looked at the sample next to our other lockers, I decided to reduce the height to give more variation within our product range.

We didn't want The Standard to feel just like two Lowdowns together, we wanted her to have her own identity!

We wound up with a product that really holds her own, there's nothing else like it in the Mustard family.

When did you first see The Standard in real life?

Becca and I first saw The Standard when we visited our factory in China last year. We were referring to it as 'The LowLowdown' back then! We were SO excited to see this new locker in real life in our signature colour, Mustard.

Straight away, she felt part of the Mustard family and although we made lots of design tweaks and changes, we both knew that this was going to be our next product launch.

How are you most excited to see it used?

We gave visitors at Sydney's Life InStyle trade show a sneak peek of The Standard, and I loved hearing how they would use it!

A few people talked about using it at the end of the bed to store all of your bedding and blankets, which I thought was so clever! When designing The Standard, I was primarily thinking of it as a media storage unit, but customers have suggested some other really great uses. For example, it's a great size for storing shoes in a hallway.

If you could add anything else to the Mustard family, what would it be?

Do I have to pick just one thing?! I have lots of exciting ideas up my sleeve. I want to add some new materials to our range, I can see glass in our future!

Get ready to fall in love with lockers

Founded by sisters Becca and Jess, Mustard Made creates colourful lockers for home, work and play.

Mustard launched in Australia (where Becca lives) and the UK (where Jess lives) in 2018 and we've been spreading the locker love around the world ever since.

We're here to help you tidy up and look good while you're at it. We've reimagined old-school lockers to make them pretty and practical.

Our products are designed to be used anywhere from a new baby's nursery to a cool co-working space. With versatility and function at the core, our lockers bring colour and playfulness to any space.

We like to joke that Mustard is just a way for us to hang out more often, but it's more than that.

We're a family business with a big heart, big dreams and a love for lockers in all shapes and sizes.
