A little bit of history
“A big WELCOME and enjoy”

Cheltenham has been described as “the most complete Regency town” due to the large number of Regency style buildings many of them listed Grade II and Grade II*. Cheltenham came to attention after King George III came to the town for 5 weeks in 1788 to take the spa waters as a cure. The town became extremely fashionable from then on especially in the Regency period from 1811 to 1820 when King George III was deemed unfit to rule and his son George IV was created Regent. By 1850 Cheltenham was the largest town in Gloucestershire with 35,000 inhabitants.

The building boom continued into George IV’s reign with fortunes being made and lost with some of the most notable examples of the latter being the grand development of Pittville by Joseph Pitt and John Forbes including the Grade I Listed Pittville Pump Rooms, imposing houses and the pleasure gardens and boating lake.

Why move to Cheltenham?

The town is home to National Hunt racing with its fabulous race course at Prestbury Park with its backdrop of the Cotswold Hills and is also home to one of the oldest annual cricket festivals and other festivals including literary, jazz and science festival. There are good sporting amenities including gyms and swimming pools, a croquet club, tennis and hockey club as well as a 1930’s Lido swum in by no

less than Tarzan or rather by the actor who played him, Johnny Weismuller. The town has 2 theatres including the wonderful Everyman Theatre which opened in 1891.

Cheltenham has a council that supports and looks after its trees and we have some very beautiful trees in the town centre including some lovely Cedars. There are plenty of green spaces in the town

including Pittville Park, Sandford Park, Imperial Gardens, Montpellier Gardens, Clarence Square and Wellington Square. Leckhampton Hill and Cleeve Hill are both on the doorstep with acres of green land to walk and the famous Devil’s Chimney to look at on Leckhampton Hill – a stack of rock believed to have been created by the quarry workers.

Ideal living

The Regency town of Cheltenham Spa with its grand tree lined Promenade, swanky boutiques and laid-back metro-fabulous feel, is a countryside-with-benefits kind of place. Voted the ‘Best place to live in the South West 2020’ by The Sunday Times it’s two hours west of London. With enough retail thrills to keep any ex-urbanite happy, it has an arts, culture and festival calendar to rival the capital.

The pretty Imperial Gardens are located to the rear of Cheltenham’s Town Hall and new for 2022 is the luxury 5-screen boutique cinema, TIVOLI. Property-wise you’re spoilt for choice, Cheltenham is famous for its stunning Regency architecture of course our famous white townhouses. Head for the popular nearby suburbs of Leckhampton and Charlton Kings with their cosy Victorian terraces, boutiques and artisan coffee shops.

The Montpellier and Suffolks districts are bursting with

independent boutiques like Bodega, Revamp, Jackeroo and interiors emporium Catherine Colebrook. Cheltenham’s shopping areas are also peppered with big name brands such as Anthropologie, Hobbs, Toast and Space NK. You’ll be coveting everything at the Little Interior Co (winner of Best lifestyle Shop in the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2022). There’s a John Lewis on the high street that’s driven the town’s desres factor sky high.

Interview with Jeremy Dickman-Wilkes extendArchitecture

Tell us about the background of extendArchitecture?

Since leaving Sheffield University with a Degree in Architecture, a Diploma with Distinction in Architecture, an M.A. in Architecture, and the RIBA Silver Medal in 1983, I have worked as a design architect with highly-regarded private practices in Bath, Bristol, Dubai and the Seychelles. With over 35 years of experience, I have been involved in the design and implementation of residential, commercial, industrial and health projects of all sizes. I founded extendArchitecture in 2011 to specialise in residential design. Since then, I have designed hundreds of new houses and extensions in the South-West, including work on Listed Buildings and properties in Conservation Areas.

What’s your customer process from receiving that initial enquiry?

An initial enquiry is followed by a meeting at the property to introduce myself, answer queries, view the building and site and obtain an understanding of the potential clients’ requirements. The brief, which is fundamental to the process, is developed and a planning survey of the property is carried out. Multiple design options are explored prior to commencing detailed architectural design. Preliminary design layouts and sketches are produced to establish a satisfactory scheme, which is then progressed to a full planning submission, or beyond, if required.

What characteristics set you apart from other practices?

Because I am a sole practitioner, no project is delegated to other staff. I can focus my complete

attention on each project, giving it my full individual dedication. I deal with the creation of the brief, the design work and negotiations with other professionals, including planners, from inception to planning permission and beyond, if required. Each project is individual and unique and I approach it with an open mind to explore all of the opportunities the property allows. The design must be sympathetic to any existing buildings or context, whether in an identical or contrasting style. I aim to collaborate fully with my clients to develop an appropriate and thorough brief which generates a design solution that exceeds their functional and aesthetic expectations.

Could you illustrate an example of a residential development you worked on locally and the outcome for your client?

Every project is notable and pleasing in its own way. One local example would be the design of a new house to replace an unattractive 1970s bungalow on a 0.05 hectare site in Charlton Kings. The challenge was to design a very contemporary, detached two-storey four-bedroom home in keeping with its surroundings where neighbouring properties were a mix of bungalows and two-storey detached houses. Collaboration with my clients and discussions with the planners were detailed and complex, but ultimately extremely rewarding. The end result was a very spacious house incorporating light-filled open plan living spaces opening on to a generous private garden. The architectural aesthetic achieved was distinctly modern but the massing and careful use of beautiful traditional materials (albeit in a more abstract manner) meant that the house was sympathetic to its neighbours, creating an elegant addition to the streetscape and a glorious space in which to live and thrive.

What is the most pleasing aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspects of the process are: exceeding the clients’ brief through the creation of buildings and spaces that enhance lives; designing buildings that conserve energy and world resources through responsible sourcing of materials, sustainable design and renewable energy solutions where possible; and the design of buildings and spaces with inherent flexibility and future adaptability. Well-planned buildings should be unpretentious yet self-assured, and should make the lives of the users easier, more comfortable and more fulfilling.

Meet the School Head, Bradley Salisbury

Tell us a little of the history of Dean Close?

Founded in 1886, Dean Close is a Christian School which offers an outstanding, all-through education for day and boarding pupils from the ages of 2-18. It was one of the first schools to become co-educational with the first girl arriving in 1968. It sits on a beautiful 50 acre, one-site campus site just a short walk from the beautiful tonw2 of Cheltenham and its vibrant Dean Close community, along with its strong pastoral reputation, are significant strengths.

A mixture of stately Victorian architecture and aesthetically designed, modern buildings allow Dean Close to successfully combine its traditional values with its modern approach and state-of-the-art facilities.

What would you say is special about life at your school?

Dean Close is famous for its whole-hearted welcome and visitors regularly comment on the atmosphere and how warm and friendly they find it. Key to our USPs are our distinctive Values (Courage, Contribution, Love and Flourishing) combined with a set of essential Skills for the Future (Compassion, Collaboration,

Critical Thinking, Communication and Creativity) which permeate the teaching and culture of the school. These elements are all embedded into the curriculum and will enable pupils to have the flexibility, resilience and confidence to enter the world of work, knowing that the jobs they will do in 10, 15 or 20 years from now are, in many cases, ones that cannot currently be described or imagined.

Every child who joins Dean Close, at any point in their educational journey, is a recipient of this educational programme, making their experience at Dean Close distinct.

What aspects of the school are you most well known for?

Dean Close is widely known for its sport, both facilities and the depth of professionals, as well as the consistent outstanding hockey, rugby, tennis and equestrian success. A Forest School is used extensively by the younger children. The high-quality drama (at all ages), the incredible impressive Art school, Music School with its resident Carducci Quartet, professional cookery school and Leiths course, and the ambitious continuing building development programme, are all strings to the Dean Close bow.

What sporting facilities do you have?

2 astro turf pitches (one national playing level) with floodlights

Sports hall with gym and dance studio

Tennis courts

Netball courts

Cricket nets (indoor and out)

Indoor 25m pool

Climbing wall

Rifle range

Mountain bike track

Which destinations do your pupils go on to?

Pupils go on to study at a range of universities across the country, and the world, including Oxbridge, Russell Group, Music and Arts colleges.

Meet coombes:everitt Architects

Tell us what inspired you to become architects

It was really borne from the desire to bring the benefit of good design to all kinds of buildings – both in terms of creating beautiful spaces to live, while also taking a more holistic approach to design that incorporates the wider issues that we are facing such as the environment and the recent energy crisis.

It’s not just about designing new homes, but also about improving and reinvigorating existing properties and looking at how we can bring the best design and energy efficient solutions to these..

How does this translate into the way you work at coombes:everitt?

We want to know what’s important to our clients. We take the time to understand how they want to live so that we can create spaces that really work for them. After all, who would have thought five years ago that having an office or study in the house would become the norm for so may of us! We then translate these ideas into sketches, computer aided designs, or virtual reality technology – whatever works best to bring a particular design to life for our client. We do enjoy projects which present an interesting design challenge, whether that’s creating a new dwelling or taking an existing structure and transforming it – coming up with designs that delight our clients.

What do your clients say about coombes:everitt?

We take pride in the service we offer our clients. Our clients say that they value the flair, imagination and

creative expertise we bring to their projects. That we have an ongoing conversation throughout any project and are able to address any concerns or issues that arise. That we listen and adapt ideas accordingly.

We always visit the site with the client and see for ourselves exactly ‘what’s what’. This gives us a much better understanding of the building’s context and environment. Are there views that need to be factored in? Slopes or different levels to accommodate? What’s the light like at different times of the day? What’s the outdoor space like?

What else can you offer clients?

We can help our clients put together a great team of experts: one that will ensure they get the quality end result they’re seeking. We can help with planning applications and processes. We’ve built up good relationships with the region’s planning authorities so have a good understanding of how it all works.

What do you most enjoy about the job?

Every client and every project is different and we love this because we get to develop bespoke solutions. We are lucky to be able to work on projects that really matter to our clients and to help them create their dream homes. It’s stimulating to be able to work across the Cotswolds on projects ranging from traditional to contemporary designs in such a beautiful area of the country.

An Interview with Gabriela Hughes, Head of Residential Design at Blocc Interiors

Tell us about Blocc Interiors

We are a specialist interior design company based in Worcestershire, although our work often takes us nationally. Established in 2009, we have expertise that spans over 30 years. Our team of interior professionals offers a bespoke personalised service to discerning private client homeowners.

What is your process for working with private clients when it comes to interior design?

Our journey together begins with a complimentary consultation. We help you develop a comprehensive design for your home, paying particular attention to your lifestyle, all-important wish list, must haves, design goals and any challenges. We talk together and explore what inspires you. Our role is to provoke your thoughts & emotion and simply just listen. To allow us to understand your initial thoughts and how you would like to experience your home to bring it to life through intelligent, considered choices on colour, texture, shape & proportion. We will discuss and agree the budget with you and how this is managed to your best advantage throughout the process. Once we understand your preferences, taste, and style we will interpret and create detailed mood boards which illustrate our proposed design scheme, complete with samples of fabrics & wallcoverings and any furniture finishes we intend to use in your design. It is at this stage we discuss and agree with you any alterations or additions you may wish to add. We have now reached the final design stage, we will present to you; final boards, a fully detailed inventory, furniture plan – showing you exactly where we have positioned all selected items and provide you with a full supply & install final quotation along with a timeline. Upon acceptance to

proceed, we introduce you to your dedicated project manager who works alongside us throughout the whole process, right through to installation day. Your project manager will organise the full programme of works and keeps you informed of progress every step of the way.

How can you help the owners of a new home achieve their interiors aspirations?

Most new homeowners want to personalise their new property to make a house into their dream home. Often properties come with colour schemes, designs and features from previous owners. That’s where we can help offering services from architectural design, project management, soft furnishings through to whole house transformations. Giving our clients the benefit of our expert knowledge, is to offer suggestions and ideas, and push the boundaries for a statement result that is ultimately all about the homeowner, their home and their lifestyle. Working with us will be exciting and liberating rather than an intimidating experience!

Why choose Blocc Interiors?

It’s our attention to detail, we do sweat the small stuff, scheduling of timelines, first class project management, adhering to your budget once the design has been agreed, please come and enjoy the experience with us.

Planning & Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

www.cheltenham.gov.uk/info/12/ planning_and_development

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
