It also doubles as a cactus pop-up shop occasionally, to accommodate my other passion: plants! It’s a bit of a hobby, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed planting up lots of cactus babies (and a few succulents) and meeting everyone who comes along to each pop-up event. I love the fact that this studio has afforded me the ability to work from home (you gotta love a ten-second commute!) and given me a space for my side hustle. characterfilled

“We have added all the character back into this Californian bungalow, with period features to make it look original,” says interior designer Danielle Bonello-Dunsford of Danielle Victoria Design. Details such as the custom-made arch window and door, VJ walls and ornate cornices create a space brimming with old-world charm. One of the standout features is the perforated panelling on the door fronts of the washing machine and dryer – a signature design created by Danielle. “It took me hours to find the right mesh profile that could be painted in the matching polyurethane colour. It allows ventilation and looks beautiful in a laundry that doubles as a bathroom or butler’s pantry as it hides the appliances,” says Danielle.

dual use

This home’s laundry, originally located in a small cupboard off the dining room, was inaccessible and impractical. The solution – dreamt up by Caitlin Lantieri, Principal and Design Director of Vision Design Studio – was to combine the home’s new main bathroom with the laundry.

PHOTOGRAPHY JOEL NOON / INTERIOR DESIGN VISION DESIGN STUDIO

“We combined them into one multifunctional space, which in turn allowed us to regain the space in the dining room,” says Caitlin. “Designing the washer and dryer in a stacked configuration freed up valuable floor space and created a practical and ergonomic way of doing laundry.” To keep consistency across the two zones, the same laminate finish was used on the fronts of the laundry doors and vanity. When the doors are shut, the appliances are hidden out of view, keeping the bathroom’s overall aesthetic clean and uncluttered.

highly functional

Professional renovators and former ‘Blockheads’ Rachel and Ryan designed this laundry for their clients’ family home. “The brief for this space was to design a functional laundry that also looked like an oasis to match the rest of this home,” says Rachel.

Ergonomics were also considered; the washer and dryer are both elevated off the floor for ease of use. “This busy family is constantly washing, so minimising the impact of having to bend down to your appliances is a small change to your everyday life that makes a big impact,” Rachel explains. “It also stops little fingers from playing with the settings and we believe it looks so much better too.”

18

PHOTOGRAPHY TIM FRAWLEY

This laundry is aesthetically pleasing as well as highly functional. “We added ample bench space and purposeful cupboard space, such as an ironing cupboard with storage for the iron and ironing board, and a hamper drawer for washing. We also added a hanging rail that was custom measured to our clients’ actual shirt length so that ironed shirts would never be dragging on the bench.”

dogs welcome

Pooch-loving homeowners briefed interior designer Jenni Michalowsky from Vision Design Studio to create a stylish laundry that could also accommodate their pets. “Not only did our clients need a much more functional laundry; they also wanted to comfortably wash their four-legged family members,” says Jenni. The custom-tiled trough sink works well for hand washing larger items and can also fit their fur babies. “Opting for a bolder tile in this sink area helped balance out the materials and anchor this feature in the layout of the room. Practically speaking, tiles are more durable and easier to keep clean compared to a cabinetry finish. It is essentially a mini shower space, so is completely waterproofed as a tiled shower base would be, meaning the homeowners can have complete peace of mind.” Measuring just 2.45m x 2.85m, this modestly sized space is filled with intentional storage solutions. “We needed to maximise every inch of the room to enable a multi-functional space. Being a thoroughfare from the garage to the kitchen, a mini mud space was another necessity to enhance functionality. It creates a comfortable area to put on and store shoes, as well as giving easy access to all the dogs’ items when taking them for a stroll.”

hidden in a hallway

Interior designer Lydia Maskiell helped her clients turn this linen cupboard off the hallway into a practical laundry. “This was somewhat of a blank canvas, as it had minimal shelving,” says Lydia. “The space wasn’t utilised to its full potential, as there was a lot of wasted space with the cupboard depth. The client wanted a laundry space closer to the main living quarters, which was the perfect opportunity to explore the deep, forgotten cupboard off the hallway.” At 1m x 1.5m, this European-style laundry still has all the practical features you’d expect from a laundry, including a stacked washer and dryer, sink, and storage. “Maximising every bit of space is essential to designing a small area. With a width of 1.5m, a stacked washing machine and dryer was a great option, allowing us to use the remainder of the space for a sink and pull-out hampers. We had more depth than the normal 600mm to play with, which we used to create more storage with a shallow ledge at the back of the sink bench. As the laundry joinery is housed in a closet, open storage was more useful and an opportunity to display decorative baskets.”

“It may be small, but it certainly packs a punch with the mosscoloured cabinetry.” – LYDIA MASKIELL

VINEYARD DREAM

Craving a simpler life, Cassie and Chris Payne walked away from high-pressure jobs in Los Angeles to build their dream home on a Tamar Valley vineyard. Cheers to that! Taking in the view from their home at Glendale Estate, north-west of Launceston, Cassie Payne is caring for new baby Ziggy and reflecting on vineyard life. “Our days are packed,” she admits. Between running the boutique vineyard and farm, holding tastings at its cellar door, and facilitating a full calendar of weddings and events, there’s never a dull moment for the Payne family. “Right now we’re also knee-deep in pressing our freshly fermented pinot noir.” Ziggy is baby number four for Cassie and Chris, joining Leo (7), Lennox (5), and Lulu (3). Though the days are busy, Cassie says they wouldn’t trade it for their old life in the States. “We were both entrenched in high-stress corporate jobs, and we yearned for a simpler, purpose-filled life in a more natural environment.” Chris is from Tasmania originally, making it an obvious choice for a change of pace. When they viewed a quaint vineyard in Tamar Valley with buildings dating back to the 1800s, they were enamoured immediately and submitted an offer the same day. They’ve since renovated multiple structures on the property, transforming the old apple-packing shed into a cellar door and the applepickers’ hut into a delightful Airbnb cottage. 28

The couple worked with building designers Woodbury & Co, builder Inhabit Construction, and interior designer Lydia Maskiell to overhaul the estate’s 1940s ranch-style farmhouse, gutting and extending it to capitalise on the property’s sublime views. Timber plays a starring role in the home’s design. Spotted-gum cladding lends the exterior a modern flavour and simultaneously connects it to the land and its history. “The existing heritage buildings had these beautiful rustic silver timber facades that I wanted to honour,” Cassie explains. “It was crucial to maintain harmony between the old and the new.” Inside, wood panelling on the kitchen’s raked ceiling and walls elevates the space. Interior designer Lydia Maskiell refers to the home’s timber elements, including its elegant herringbone flooring, as “the middleman that breaks the starkness and adds warmth”, while black accents anchor and refine the palette. In the formal dining room, a marble fireplace commands the space, while arched door openings frame views to the rolling hills beyond. “A series of arches and rounded forms throughout the home balance and soften the harsher straight edges,” Lydia > adds.

P O O L S I D E The home overlooks the dramatic black pool and farmland. Cassie and Chris opted for spotted gum exterior cladding – over time it will develop a silvered patina and blend with the landscape. Umbrellas from Business & Pleasure Co.

This balanced approach is echoed in the furnishings, where natural materials such as rattan, shearling sheepskin, leather and linen are layered beneath the elegant geometry of sleek black windows and the artful arrangement of contrasting light fixtures. Just as the home’s exterior was conceived of as something that will weather beautifully as time goes on, its interior was designed to accommodate growth and change; the children’s rooms have built-in desks, storage is plentiful, and the versatile pool house can accommodate guests or function as an extra living zone.

34

The house feels expansive yet nurturing – perhaps a fitting metaphor for Cassie and Chris’s Tasmanian gear shift. While balancing entrepreneurship with parenting little people has its challenges, Cassie explains that the children genuinely love helping with farm life: “It makes our daily routines fun and exciting. The beauty of owning our business lies in the freedom to incorporate the whole family into our work.”

If the weathered spotted-gum boards of this old shed could speak, what might they tell us? Stories of an apple orchard in the early 1900s. Conversations of farm workers after a long day picking fruit. The voices of Italian prisoners housed on the property during World War II… Just a small part of Tasmania’s fascinating history, Glendale Cottage has been thoughtfully renovated by the owners of what is now Glendale Estate farm and vineyard. Cassie and Chris Payne bought the Tamar Valley property in 2018, converting its old apple packing shed into a cellar door, redesigning the 1940s homestead into a beautiful modern farmhouse for their family (see our feature on page 26), and converting this apple pickers’ hut into an Airbnb. The pickers’ hut was already a functional cottage when Cassie and Chris bought the farm. “It still had charm but was quite worn and dated,” explains Cassie. They retained the original floors, windows, fireplace, and exterior timber boards and decking, so the cottage still feels rustic. Inside, however, their renovation has achieved an air of understated comfort. “It had a lot of dark wood trims in there, so one of the first things I did was brighten it up with

46

white paint,” says Cassie. The floor plan stayed the same, but they gutted the kitchen and bathroom. “There was a closet originally inside the bathroom taking up a lot of space. Taking that out enabled us to create a decent-sized shower,” Cassie explains. In the petite kitchen space, a smart redesign allowed them to tuck a fridge, microwave, stovetop, and pots and pans behind the cabinetry. When it came to styling the space, Cassie kept things simple, opting for layered textiles, timber and brass accents, and natural hues. The colour scheme gently unifies the cottage’s interior without being too matchy-matchy. “I drew inspiration from the rolling green hills on our farm, so using shades of green to freshen up the space seemed like the obvious choice.” The aim was to connect guests to the bucolic beauty of farm life. “To watch the cattle grazing in the paddocks just outside your door is pretty special, and guests love how the cottage just makes you feel like slowing down.” And sampling some local wine, of course!

As dawn breaks over Great Oyster Bay, silhouetting the mountains on the Freycinet Peninsula, sunlight slowly creeps across the decking and through the glass at Sea Stone. As the day progresses, the play of light on water, rocks and native grasses outside will be echoed indoors as it inches across timber, concrete, leather and linen. The relationship between the interior and exterior environments at this seaside hideaway is central to its appeal. Encased in spotted gum and bluestone, the structure melds with the colours and textures of the landscape in the unobtrusive way of traditional Tassie beach shacks. Meanwhile, in a contemporary twist, giant panes of glass on the oceanfront side prioritise panoramic views across the bay. The house was designed by Crump Architects and built in 2021 by Inhabit Construction. It sits within the private residential community of Piermont, near Swansea, which includes a collection of stone cottages and architecturally designed lodgings, as well as an original 180-year-old homestead.

For Cassie and Chris Payne, buying the home in 2023 realised a lifelong dream of owning a beach house. “It encapsulated everything we were looking for: a stunning oceanfront property where we could enjoy family holidays while also supplementing our income,” Cassie explains. The fact that it’s on a surf break was the cherry on top for Chris. Cassie says she fell in love with the black interior walls and ceiling of the main living area: “They evoke a sense of drama while drawing focus towards the breathtaking views.” The home has two main bedrooms either side of the central living space, and a third bedroom for children. Square Japanese glazed tiles give both bathrooms an atmosphere of pared-back indulgence. Before listing Sea Stone on Airbnb, Cassie, Chris and their young children stayed there for three weeks while their home at Glendale Estate vineyard (which you can read about on page 44) was being renovated.

Swansea ITINERARY ROAD TRIP Take a road trip to the nearby town of Bicheno and grab lunch at The Lobster Shack. The deck has panoramic views across the boat harbour. Try one of their famous lobster rolls or feast on a seafood platter. Afterwards, head to the famous Bicheno Blowhole.

DINE OUT For a special lunch or dinner, Homestead Restaurant at Piermont Retreat offers a refined dining experience with an ever-evolving menu featuring outstanding local produce. The views are wonderful too, of course! Another top-notch dining choice is The Waterloo. The seasonal menu is simple yet delicious, in a warm and relaxed setting.

TAKE A HIKE Take your time exploring majestic Freycinet National Park. There are pristine beaches to wander along and multiple hikes to choose from, some of which are challenging, but walking to the Wine Glass Bay lookout is an achievable 2.6km loop and an absolute must.

CASSIE’S TIPS FOR DESIGNING A LUXE AIRBNB Stay there yourself first. “Before you list it on Airbnb, immerse yourself in the space to understand its functionality,” Cassie recommends. Add thoughtful touches. Think wine and cheese in the fridge, and premium products for the bathrooms. Set the scene for fun. Supply equipment like kayaks and surfboards, and board games for cosy nights by the fire.

“It allowed us to envision the guest experience first-hand,” says Cassie.

Sea Stone has also been oriented towards the wedding market. “Given my involvement in the wedding industry through Glendale Estate, I envisioned Sea Stone as an idyllic backdrop for intimate coastal weddings and elopements from the outset,” says Cassie. Accordingly, the home has been styled with elegant, modern neutrals. “I selected highquality furniture pieces, primarily sourced from Sarah Ellison,” she explains. “Incorporating inviting textures and shapes, such as the white boucle swivel chairs, added depth and comfort while maintaining an air of sophistication.” The home’s inspired architecture, which both cocoons its inhabitants against Tasmania’s harsh winter conditions and rejoices in the blue skies of summer, is perfectly complemented by its luxuriously layered interior elements. Down by the rocky shore, a fire pit is the perfect spot to roast marshmallows and wonder at just how good life can get.

HOME TOUR

Soul Sister Cottage is a charming 1890s home in the Launceston suburb of Invermay. It’s the second in a collection of cottages renovated by interior designer Lydia Maskiell and her builder husband Shane Wager of Framed Renovations; we featured their earlier project, Good Soul Cottage, in Adore back in Summer 2021. The pair bought this cottage with the intention of renovating it to create an Airbnb. “We wanted guests to feel a sense of calm and have all those holiday vibes that just make you never want to leave,” says Lydia. “All our design decisions have been geared towards making our guests feel happy and inspired.” When they purchased the property, Lydia and Shane saw its potential but knew it would need a complete overhaul, starting with reconfiguring the layout to give the home a more functional flow. “The spaces in the existing cottage felt disconnected and confused, with multiple flooring material changes, incoherent colour schemes, and some parts partially renovated while others had been left untouched,” says Lydia. “We removed the existing kitchen – which barricaded the views and access to the courtyard – and flipped the position of the dining and kitchen,” Lydia explains. Adding French doors opened up the space to the outdoors. They also reworked the bathroom layout, making it more spacious and luxurious. “The existing bathroom doubled as a working laundry, which compromised the space, and the layout meant that the toilet was the first thing you saw when you walked into the room, which is my biggest pet hate in bathroom designs,” Lydia points out. “The new kitchen design allowed us to steal space from the existing pantry to create a Eurostyle laundry, accessible from the hallway and conveniently located at the back door.” >

Wanting to restore a sense of grandeur to the historic cottage, the couple created opportunities to accentuate the volume of the space. They increased the opening in between the living area and kitchen by introducing a large archway that frames the spaces beautifully and draws attention to the high ceilings. Arched details have been replicated throughout the new design – in the kitchen, behind the bath, and in the shape of the bed heads. “They act as a framing tool to highlight the significance of key areas,” says Lydia. Lydia and Shane also chose to completely overhaul the home’s electrics. “It operates over two schemes – one directed toward the working spaces and the other for ambience, which works particularly well when designing for an Airbnb.” Special consideration was also given to the materials used in the renovation, so that the interior would appeal aesthetically to a broad demographic of Airbnb guests while also being able to withstand wear and tear. It seems that Lydia and Shane have achieved this balance perfectly: “The feedback that we’ve received from guests has all been centred around the positivity and happiness that the cottage gives and how inspired they feel.”
