WE’VE ALL HEARD of the seasonal color analysis that seems to be trending again—what colors are best suited for your makeup or wardrobe selections based on your skin tone, hair, eyes, etc.

Admittedly, I’ve never done the professional analysis myself, but I do have colors I tend to reach for (my closet is currently a sea of Kelly Green; does that make me a “cool summer?”). What I didn’t realize until a recent conversation with a local designer, however, is these results are also considered when selecting paint colors—especially in a bathroom. It makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? In a space where you look in the mirror for longer than a glance, of course the surrounding colors will affect the way your reflection appears. And, of course, designers are thinking about that. If I didn’t believe our design community deserves more scientific recognition before, I certainly do now.

IT’S THE KIND OF moment many of us long for: sinking into a relaxing bath with a window to the serene outdoors, without fear of anyone in our surroundings seeing us. That’s exactly what architect Amanda Orr created for the homeowners of this pristine new build— specifically, for the wife who enjoys taking daily soaks. With the primary bathroom tucked away on a private side of the home, the architect conceived a vast, gothic-inspired steel window that invites dappled light. “It makes a statement and brings nature inside,” says Orr, who also envisioned a freestanding bathtub placed in front of the window. “It feels very ethereal, like it’s floating there. A place to melt away the day’s
stressors.” Echoing the window’s design, she conceived a similar arched niche in the wall above the marble-topped vanity. “While it’s a new house, this niche makes it feel like it’s been there,” she adds. The architect also orchestrated a circular window above the vanity that allows extra light yet room for mirrors and sconces. Orr closely collaborated with interior designer Lanier Gupton of Lanier Interiors— who’s worked with the clients on several other homes—for a bathroom with clean lines, a quintessential English style, and luxuries like marble vanity countertops with rich veining. While the rest of the home is drenched in color, Gupton immersed the bathroom in neutral colors of gray, white, and taupe. “It was fun

to allow the bathroom to speak quietly and softly,” says Gupton. To maintain the focus on the window, the designer painted its iron frame a tonal gray hue; a light fixture dangling above the tub and the vanity’s sculptural mirrors both mimic the niche’s arches. “It’s my job to accentuate the architecture as opposed to taking over with my own decorating,” says the designer. Further catering to the wife’s love of baths, motorized drapery offers privacy while still allowing light to flood the space. “When the light comes through those sheers, it’s so beautiful,” says Gupton. The result is a well-orchestrated space, where everything from an expansive shower to a makeup vanity has a place, yet allows the window and tub to remain the covetable centerpiece.

IT’S HARD TO imagine this moody, sophisticated primary bathroom as a cramped, poorly laid out space, but that’s precisely what Theresa Ory of Theresa Ory Interiors had to work with when her client brought her on. The limited flow wasn’t the only challenge: Ory and her team had just three weeks to transform the area into a showstopping oasis. “Our primary objective was to improve the flow and functionality of the space,” she says. “We wanted to deliver something thoughtful, with a sense of ease about it.” In the end, she did so much more than that. Inspiration struck quickly when she found a slab of Macchia Vecchia marble. “It had the most beautiful movement,” recalls the designer. “The curvature in the veining led to more sinuous lines in
the vanity surround. From there it was simply a matter of selecting finishes and pieces that would complement and highlight the marble.” That stunning piece of stone became the focal point as the front of the vanity. Ory then worked with a team from Joe’s Contracting Services to sculpt voluptuous sides connecting the vanity to the ceiling.
Both the vanity sides and the walls are clad in a concrete overlay, giving the whole space a seamless aesthetic. The vanity creates a T-shape, with a zero-entry shower on one side and the toilet discreetly tucked away on the other. The space that once suffered from an undesirable layout now has uninterrupted flow, and though the bathroom has no 19

natural lighting sources, she widened the entry from the bedroom to allow more light to flow in, accenting the duo of pendants over the vanity. The cave-like effect of this suburban spa retreat, reminiscent of the hammams of Morocco (from where the vintage faucets were sourced), is not lost on the homeowner. “My client told me it makes him feel like Batman,” says Ory. High praise indeed. 20

WHEN MILTON HOMEOWNERS tapped interior designer Courtney Decker of Courtney Giles Interiors and architect Brandon Ingram of his eponymous firm to build their dream primary bath, it was a blank canvas to make their dreams a reality. “This was new construction so we were able to accommodate everything the homeowner requested,” says Decker. Since the spa suite overlooks a bucolic farm setting through large triple windows, the deep soaking tub became the first piece sourced. “We knew it had to be special since the window and cabinetry on either side would frame it, making it a focal point of the room,” says

Decker. The windows are done in custom roman shades with lightdiffusing fabric, and a creamy vintage rug completes the sumptuous bath vignette. The designer chose a soothing color palette with soft white and bluegray shades. Warm brass faucets echo the white grasscloth wallcovering woven with subtle metallic threads. Custom floor-to-ceiling cabinets by Kingdom Woodworks clad in bespoke blue paint flow directly into the white marble-topped dual vanities, providing seamless storage and stylish structure
and one of the designer’s favorite elements in the entire room. “I love the reeded detail on the top drawers of each vanity,” she says. “It gives a little texture and unexpected spark to cabinetry.” Those thoughtful details abound, from the exact view chosen from the soaking tub to the expansive spa shower, glamorous swirled glass chandelier, and oversize vanity mirrors that maximize natural light. The result? A space where the homeowners can feel relaxed and rejuvenated in their at-home retreat. 25

While bathtubs usually snag the starring role, it’s a rich, marble-encased shower that steals the show in this Atlanta bathroom by STUDIO ENTOURAGE Written by ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON Photographed by REBECCA HOLLMAN
AS PART OF AN OVERALL transformation of an Atlanta home into a transitional stunner, mother-daughter duo Jane and Hillary Hollman approached the primary bathroom with one leading star in mind: an expansive shower that’s a marble masterpiece. “We wanted to capitalize on the big shower, while creating interest and comfort,” says Jane, principal designer and founder of Studio Entourage, who adds: “The bathroom had tall ceilings and big spaces, but the homeowners 30
desired intimacy and a welcoming sense of space.” The designers dropped the shower’s ceiling height and encased the front with a bold Calacatta Viola marble that makes a striking statement. Another moment of functionality and indulgence: the marble double-sided bench that offers a post for towels or a glass of wine, as well as a place to sit. So as not to compete, shower features were kept simple but textural, and that same marble cascades down

the sides of both vanities for another dramatic effect. Like two opposing worlds of nature and opulence coexisting in one space, sleek rift oak wood cabinetry by Keystone Millworks juxtaposes the starring marble. “We chose a minimal cabinet style to allow the beauty of the marble to stand out,” explains Hillary. Two vertical cabinet towers bookend the two vanities and are unified by a header soffit. Adds Jane, “It pulls together the whole wall, and those tall towers offer hidden storage.” The designers called to the marble’s warm-toned veining with brass fixtures and lighting. “The brass brings some magic to the room,” says Jane, who took a “visual risk” with a brass geometric chandelier that dances above the freestanding tub. That curving light fixture and the oval tub perfectly balance the vanity and shower’s square lines. “The bathroom has strong sides that play well together, and everything is kept clean and simple to support the big moments of the shower and countertops,” says Jane, who credits the vendors for executing a complicated mission. And for the busy couple with two kids? “It’s a retreat for them to get away and be surrounded by elegance.” 31

WHEN DESIGNING ANY space, function is of paramount importance to Matthew Rao of RAO Design Studio: The finished product must work flawlessly for the clients who will live in it day-to-day. That mandate was top of mind as he, along with Lindsay Robinson and Courtney Blair of Houston, Texas-based Tokerud + Co Interior Design, set about reconfiguring a 1980s home in Decatur that had never been updated before. Its warren of small, chopped up spaces was exactly the opposite of the seamless, functional environs the team envisioned. “The goal was to remake the primary bathbedroom suite, including the relocation of laundry, and to make it bright, open, suitable for two people, and connected to both the wardrobes and the bedroom,” explains Rao. The first step—and part of a much larger project—was to give the primary bedroom and bathroom vaulted ceilings and to have the bath space moved to the front of the house to capitalize on natural light through fulllength windows. “The windows that
were part of the former closet on the front of the house became a source of light for the brightened and relocated bath,” says Rao. Next, Rao examined the circulation and flow of the room and decided to create a vanity island—something seen often in kitchens but less so in bathrooms—to anchor the space. “It became apparent that a conventional layout against the wall with the vanity would not work and that the vanity island with [a custom] two-sided freefloating mirror was the solution,” he says. “It’s unconventional but frees the walls and puts a couple facing each other and both facing views—not just the wall—when they are using the room. It also doubled the storage we could create.” Airy, sculptural pendants add an artful touch, and the adjacent walkin shower with lookouts on both corners offers both connection and privacy. Rao is proud of what his team accomplished, saying that it exemplifies “a sense of balance and comfort with convenience.”

The 268-acre park was built in the 1940s to provide recreational opportunities for the city and spur residential growth in an area previously home to two almshouses. Fulton County had owned the broader 1,000-acre area since 1900, and then-commissioner TROY CHASTAIN wisely advised that a park makes a great community amenity. He also proposed spending $300,000 to build an outdoor concert theater, which was considered shocking at the time. By 1945, “North Fulton Park” had its now iconic amphitheatre, a golf course (the first of its kind), clubhouse, Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, horse stables, and polo fields. A year later, to honor the commissioner, the park was renamed Chastain Memorial Park. 50

In 2002, Chastain neighbors acknowledged that their park needed a caretaker and rallied to found the CHASTAIN PARK CONSERVANCY. These efforts were largely led by Chastain Park resident J.P. Matzigkeit, who served as chairman of the Conservancy and helped implement the first Chastain Park Master Plan in 2008. Today, he and his wife, Linda, host Wine Chastain, an annual fundraiser in its 13th year. This year marks the Conservancy’s 20th, and they’re holding true to Troy Chastain’s green vision: “Chastain is a gem within the Metro area’s greenspace necklace, and we want to provide more access to passive greenspace, more natural areas,” said ROSA MCHUGH, the conservancy’s president and CEO. “Having 268 acres in the middle of a neighborhood helps you put roots somewhere. It’s such an easy icebreaker to meet someone at the park.”

The fabled Chastain Park Witches Cave: If you grew up around Chastain pre-1970s, you probably have memories of this legend—a rocky tunnel in the park that kids loved to play in and conjure up witchy tales to make the trek through the dark lair super spooky and fun. Some lessthan-playful adults covered the entrances 40+ years ago, but McHugh said conversations are in the works around reviving the Witches Cave fun.

Naomi Von Habersham OVER THE LAST six months, I’ve had the opportunity to tour numerous showhouses, both in person and virtually. I’ve seen so many beautifully appointed rooms in a range of enticing styles, and the design inspiration has been, well, inspiring. But there has been one downside to seeing so much beauty—I now find my own home thoroughly lacking! Have you noticed how many luxury homes now have amazing built-in bar niches? They’re usually finished in a glam material like antiqued mirror or book-matched onyx. The assemblage of liquor bottles is equally impressive, with enough spirits to satisfy the most discerning mixologist and put my humble bar cart to shame. Anyway, I’ve decided that I most definitely need a bar niche in my home, so I’m going to add that to my design wish list. Showhouses also always boast powder rooms that truly are jewel box spaces. They usually have witty, glamorous, or sexy wallpaper that sets the tone for the room, which also typically includes great art, an exquisite vanity, and fabulous lighting. In comparison, my home’s powder room doesn’t quite cut the mustard. I do have great wallpaper in there, a Rose Cumming print no less, as well as a stylish vintage chandelier, but the vanity cabinet sticks out like a sore thumb with its not-so-attractive fiberboard. Guess it’s time for an overhaul there as well. Unfortunately for me, the biggest eyesore of all is my bathroom, which I try to keep hidden behind lock and key. Try not to cringe—my sink still retains that ugly metal sanitary trim that I believe was meant to aid housekeeping back in the 1960s. There is no beautiful marble like I continue to see in showhouses and magazines, nor is there a walk-in shower big enough to park a compact car. In fact, I still don’t have that heated towel rack that I’ve been blabbering on about for years! I guess it’s time for me to finally put all that design inspiration to good use and upgrade my house into the stylish 21st century. 55

NOT YOUR NONNA’S RECIPES—new hot spot Pendolino dresses up the fresh regional ingredients of the Southeast in an enticing Italian way, bringing the essence of Italy right to Atlanta’s doorstep. Chef and owner Kevin Maxey has long held an appreciation for Italian food and culture, musing the idea of one day opening a restaurant of his own. He took inspiration from the Pendolino olive variety—a low-oil producing olive that attracts bees, aiding pollination and growth of other nearby vegetation. Moved by the symbolism of reliance and community support, Maxey kept the name in the back of his mind. “When I came across the space in Chastain Park, I came home and told my wife, ‘I think I found Pendolino today,’” says Maxey. “It just stuck.” Designed by designer Kirby Caldwell and architect Neil Waddle with expansive booths and a mirrored bar, the sultry space is retro and dreamy with its shades of deep eggplant and rich marine, evoking an Italian Riviera feel. Dining at Pendolino is comparable to vacationing on the European coast while simultaneously embodying midcentury Brooklyn. This seamless 56

I
IT’S A SWOON-WORTHY home deserving of social media fame, which makes sense when you realize it’s the residence of popular Atlanta fashion creator and lifestyle tastemaker Jess Cathell of J.Cathell, and her husband, Matt. When Cathell was ready to refresh their Buckhead abode, she enlisted designer Courtney Decker of Courtney Giles Interiors to match the home (originally designed and built in 2009 by architect Duane Stone) to her stylish career, while catering to the active lifestyle of her three young girls. “Jess has a solid grasp on what she likes and what works together because of her fashion background and building outfits,” says Decker. “While it’s a different arena from interior design, she understands layering, mixing different textures, and pops of color. That made it easy for me.” Decker created a youthful, feel-good home bragging happy hues, bold wallpapers, and furniture wrapped in livable fabrics that can withstand the family’s active lifestyle. The designer started by lightening and brightening the family room—where she kept the backdrop neutral but added pops of blues inspired by the room’s contemporary painting. She also swathed ivory couches in kid-friendly fabrics and created mirrored custom built-in cabinets, not only to hide the TV, but with bifold doors to prevent the children from running into it.
Touch of Blue left Rather than rip out the sink in the powder room, Decker skirted it with a Fabricut fabric for a custom feel and added fun wallpaper for personality.

Creative Corner above The lifestyle creator’s office is a respite for her to work and rejuvenate, with custom shelves to display her fashion finds. Hartmann &

The family room’s dashes of blue set the tone for the first floor, including in the nearby sunroom, where animal and ikat print pillows and a patterned rug ground the space. The primary bedroom breaks the color code with orange details— Cathell’s favorite color—and flows into the creator’s office, which Decker transformed into “an oasis and inspirational workspace” by enveloping the formerly white walls in a bluegreen color for a cozy feel. Built-ins display Cathell’s books,
mementos, and other fashionable baubles. Rooms upstairs are brimming with sweet details and big personalities, where Decker allowed the girls—ages 8, 9, and 11—to weigh in on the design of their bedrooms. The oldest daughter’s room is a pink dream with a darling bed canopy and glam details like a mirrored nightstand. “It’s sweet, but sophisticated at the same time,” says Decker. The middle daughter’s room features lavender-striped wallpaper, 67

patterned storage ottomans, and a dark purple headboard, while the youngest daughter’s room stands out with its bold floral print wallpaper and soft blush hues. More joyful details cloak the communal spaces and invite gathering—from a “hang room” for the girls decked out in blue buffalo-check wallpaper and a green sectional for lounging, to another guest bedroom that serves as a restful retreat. The nearby basement TV room is perfectly positioned for sleepovers, fitted with two L-shape sectionals and triangle ottomans that can easily be rearranged. Even the lavender laundry room doubles as an artsand-crafts hub for the daughters, where Decker anchored the room with light fixtures draped in custom shades and Hayden Paints painted a geometric pattern on the floor. “It’s always fun when a client allows you to display creativity like this,” she says. Keeping Character
W
WHEN THE FIRST ROOM past the foyer is the bar, you know you’ve entered a pad with personality. As restaurateurs with establishments serving Atlanta, Birmingham, and other areas in the Southeast, the homeowners of this circa-1920s Peachtree Heights Park abode knew an extensive renovation was needed to usher their home into something that honored the past, but also fit their family’s modern-day needs. With their clients’ careers in mind, designer Helen Hanavich and architect Jonathan LaCrosse set

out to create spaces prime for entertaining— the result an approachable, vibrant residence for a growing Buckhead family. LaCrosse’s traditionalist eye lent itself well to bringing the home back to its former historic glory. Prior to the renovation, the facade had a colonnade row with three pairs of French doors, which LaCrosse filled in to give a deep recess for a foyer that’s more aligned with its original nature (LaCrosse says that architecturally during the teens and ’20s, as is the case in this home, it was common for

houses to have ceremonial front doors that opened into large reception rooms). Sunlight bounces around the grand foyer’s glossy walls, creating a youthful playfulness that’s ideal for a family with two young children. In order to define the space and give it more pizzazz, the team opted to borrow footage from the living room to add a long, linear, pass-through bar that makes a statement in a rich, high-gloss green. Serving as an anchor for the home’s color palette, Hanavich and LaCrosse took inspiration from 82
moody cocktail lounges to define the high-class hangout area. Subtle splashes of green echo from the living room to the formal dining room, where there are varying shades ranging from grass to chartreuse. In the latter, walls are covered in mural wallpaper panels, which was a design risk that the homeowners welcomed. “Japanese cranes on your wall may not be for everyone, but the clients really wanted to do the house justice,” says Hanavich. In the bedrooms, the primary room is the parental retreat,

but Hanavich says the homeowners had a particular desire to make the kids’ areas exceptional. “I’ve found that adults spend so much time in kids’ bedrooms, and I’m happy to make them feel special so it doesn’t feel like a chore being in there.” Floor-to-ceiling wallpaper in the little boy’s room warms the otherwise grand space. “It’s too big and elegant for you to simply paint the walls and throw some kids’ art
on them. It would have fallen flat,” says Hanavich. Opting for playful wallpaper gives a sense of whimsical maturity meant to grow as the children age. From its spacious foyer almost beckoning to be filled with partygoers to the bar where the resident mixologist can tinker, this home exudes happiness. “And it brings me joy too,” says Hanavich. Built to Last
Architect Linda MacArthur and builder Michael Ladisic utilized large windows to showcase the new build’s idyllic setting and welcome in natural light. The landscape design is by David Johnson.
W “WE JOKED THAT it’s good that she likes blue, or else this would have been a very difficult project,” says interior designer Courtney Walker of her clients, a wife and husband who shared a fortuitous love of the hue, which flows through their gracious new build in Brookhaven. The pair sought a home that would comfortably fit their blended family of seven, with bedrooms for each of the five children and a restful suite for themselves, plus plenty of inviting spaces—indoors and out—to gather as a family and with friends. The build, a collaboration between architect Linda MacArthur and Ladisic Fine Homes, began as a spec house intended for empty nesters, but it became the ideal place for the brood of seven to alight. In its original iteration, MacArthur devised what she calls a “transformer,” with a second floor that resembles a half story from the street and could be finished if more rooms were needed. These spaces— now the children’s bedrooms and playroom—are loaded with charm. Angled walls are wrapped in wood paneling that evoke a finished attic feel, with 7-foot knee walls ensuring that nothing is cramped. The front facade is elegant and approachable, with drama infused through steep gables, large-scale windows, and a swooped roof that echoes the slope of the lot. MacArthur drew the portico and dormers out from the edifice and applied a mix of siding and brick to impart interest and balance.

On the main level, a mix of open-concept spaces for gathering and tucked-away places for repose flow seamlessly for both busy school days and lively weekends with friends, with special attention paid to the relationship between indoor and outdoor living. A large folding window connects the bar, which is sandwiched between the living room and covered patio, to the alfresco dining space for easy sharing of drinks, snacks, and conversation. The home’s blue color story, crafted by Walker, begins outside too. Throw pillows and host chairs in an angular print were the first accent Walker and her clients selected, and the tone flows inside from there. Walker customized block-printed pillows in the living room, where she plotted restful seating for the family of seven with two pairs of swivels and a charcoalhued sofa. In the kitchen, an oversize island with a 3-inch-thick Taj Mahal quartzite top fits just enough barstools to seat each

of the children, though Walker says they often prefer to congregate at the walnut dining table, where priority was placed on comfort. “The homeowners wanted people to be able to finish their meal and not be itching to get out of their chairs,” she says. The keeping room sports walls in a cornflower blue for a saturated take on the home’s signature shade. With its immense arched window and secluded locale, MacArthur envisioned it to be a quiet place to bask in the sunlit views of the neighborhood. “Brookhaven is one of those neighborhoods where people want to move in and never want to move out,” she says of the home’s plum location. Walker reveled in shepherding the primary suite in a feminine direction, embellishing the paneled ceiling with a jewel-like polished nickel-and-acrylic chandelier and echoing
the curves of the keeping room window in the linens and arched accent chairs. In the wife’s closet, large-scale floral wallpaper makes the ceiling come alive, and an ebullient light fixture is a prime companion. Upstairs, a playroom is fit for all of the children, who range in age from tweens to teens, thanks to zones—a TV lounge, a study nook, and cabinetry to house games, art supplies, and books—that cater to everyone’s pursuits. The youngest daughter’s bedroom is an aberration in soft pink, with youthful yet polished furnishings that will be suitable for years to come. Like the good fortune of the homeowners’ consensus on color, their move-in date, after being delayed by supply chain issues, fell just 48 hours before they hosted a birthday bash for the husband in their new home.
