Concerned by the loss of cultural diversity in our rapidly modernizing world, photographer Chris Rainier traveled the globe documenting the world’s traditional cultures with a focus on indigenous dances and rituals. The result is this mesmerizing photographic collection of rare and ancient masks, collected over 20 years and across six continents. Preserved in hidden locations at the edge of the known world, the masks displayed in this book are hallmarks of cultural and religious traditions from across the globe. Through his stunning photography—at once mysterious and ethereal—Rainier takes us on a continent-spanning survey of the practice of veiling one face with another—from the masks used in scarification rituals in Burkina Faso to Bön Buddhist masks long hidden away in a Bhutanese monastery. Accompanying the striking images are a foreword by renowned essayist Pico Iyer and stories recounting Rainier’s journeys to the remote reaches of the earth to preserve the memory of these ancient objects of beauty and power and the cultures that produced them. Rainier, a National Geographic explorer and photographer, has dedicated his life to preserving cultural heritage. Through his lens, we see an awe-inspiring portrayal of the rich cultural diversity our world still has to offer. 4

WILD ELEPHANTS

Conservation in the Age of Extinction PHOTOGRAPHY BY ART WOLFE TEXT BY SAMUEL WASSER INTRODUCTION BY JEFFREY MOUSSAIEFF MASSON

In Wild Elephants, Art Wolfe seeks to capture on camera just what makes elephants so special and so worth saving.

Legendary for their size and intelligence, elephants are one of the most charismatic of megafauna. That they are under siege from poachers is no secret, and the rapidity of their declining numbers is horrifying. But amid the steady stream of bad news, all is not lost. Ivory prices are declining, global education seems to be succeeding, and recent government crackdowns are beginning to stem the flow of illegal ivory. While Wild Elephants features photographs of both African and Asian species, the emphasis is on the African savanna elephant, or bush elephant. Samuel Wasser’s informative text will focus on his current groundbreaking research on the impacts of the illegal ivory trade and the legal but controversial culling practices used for population control of this highly intelligent, social species. Wild Elephants is a celebration of these wondrous gentle giants and the renewed efforts countries are taking to protect their natural heritage, as well as a discussion of how we can empower local populations to safeguard a magnificent species. 6

HUMAN CANVAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ART WOLFE FOREWORD BY CHRIS RAINIER

Human Canvas combines Art Wolfe’s world-famous photography with his exquisite painting to create a groundbreaking collection of body art.

What does it mean to be human? In Human Canvas, Art Wolfe uses his exceptional photography and his background in fine-art painting to transform skin into an abstract landscape. Inspired by the body-painting traditions of indigenous peoples Wolfe has photographed worldwide, and particularly those in Ethiopia and Papua New Guinea, Wolfe set out to present his own take on this art form and explore concepts of universal beauty. Through the use of lines, patterns, textures, and unusual points of view, Wolfe abstracts the human form and creates a unique and captivating look of the human body as art. The result is an energized expression of both artistic mastery and cultural impact. Over his expansive career, Wolfe has traveled to every continent. He has ventured from 19,000-foot heights on Mount Everest to the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, 410 feet below sea level, as well as deep into sacred lands on the Tibetan Plateau, the Indian subcontinent, and the desert Southwest.

He has visited indigenous tribes deep in the Amazon rainforest, high in the Baliem Valley in Western New Guinea, and in Ethiopia’s arid Omo River valley. Each new group of people he connected with showed him that, despite our cultural differences, inside we’re all just human. Through this fearless effort by a photographer uniquely qualified by study and life experiences in the cultural and artistic worlds, Wolfe manages to universalize the concept of human beyond race, gender, politics, or any other differentiating feature.

PETER: I first heard about mycoremediation through Paul Stamets’ book, Mycelium Running. I read it when I was about 20 and discovered that there was more to mushrooms than even their ecological importance or cultivating them for food and medicine. That got my mind in a whirl and took me in many directions that I’ve pursued since. DANIEL: I heard about mycoremediation for the first time after watching Paul Stamets’ Ted Talk, “Six Ways that Mushrooms Can Save the World.” I was actually coming back from working on an oil spill. Not long after watching that video I bought a flow hood, a pressure cooker, and set up my own Mycology lab.

materials as well as break down complex chemicals that are similar to Lignin, which makes wood hard and rigid. It turns out they can break down many other complex things we humans have invented. I like to call them mycoremediators. We try to understand what fungi do naturally and replicate those processes or that entire system when handling and dealing with environment pollution.

Damage to both the land and its peoples has been extensive. While various groups continue to fight the company in court over repatriation and clean-up costs and responsibilities, the Amazon Mycorenewal Project (now called CoRenewal), founded in 2010, has brought together a team of experts, activists, and local tribes to research, design, and implement biological solutions using the remedial power of fungi. Pilot projects are underway addressing both petroleum-contaminated soils and municipal wastewater contaminants while the organization continues to study the capacity of native microbes to mitigate petroleum toxicity with plans for a fungal research laboratory and mushroom cultivation space.

’m sitting on a log that was once was a tree. It probably became infected by a disease and fell over. And when it did, fungi infested the log to decompose it. Coming out of the bottom of these fungi are mycelium, tiny little threads of organic life. There are literally thousands of miles of mycelium infesting this one big log here; along its length the mycelium sends out enzymes and different organic acids that decay the wood. In the process of decaying the wood, the wood releases the nutrients that are in it. Those nutrients then become available to the fungus itself and to other organisms that are part of the food web. Without this process, the planet would choke. This forest would be miles deep in organic decay. The only reason we can walk around in these woods is because thousands of species of these fungi are decaying different sizes and species of logs as well as the litter on the forest floor. Once the log starts to decay and release some nutrients, other organisms such as mites and nematodes move in and start eating the fungus, small bits of leftover wood, and other organic material, which they then exude. Some of that ends up in the nutrient cycle, but then other critters like springtails or spiders come along and eat the nematodes, and then other creatures eat the springtails and spiders, and so it goes up the food chain to larger and larger organisms, even these mushrooms, which themselves are food for squirrels. The squirrel becomes part of that food chain, and eventually something will eat the squirrel—maybe a bird, maybe a bear—so it’s all linked back to that original wood-decomposing fungus. In all ecosystems, death and decay are the fundamental beginning of life. If a forest never goes through this process, it can’t regenerate. It gets crowded with big trees, leaving little room for young ones because there are no gaps for them. There’s no light, no water, no nutrients because they’re all getting sucked up by the big trees. Decay organisms like fungus are crucial for starting that process of regeneration. They are the building blocks of the ecosystem, the fundamental starting place for how a forest grows. DIRECTIONAL DIRECTIONAL

F

ungi are fascinating because they can do things that other organisms can’t do. They can digest things that other things can’t digest. They don’t need sex to reproduce. They’re metabolically ingenious. They can “cross over” and share genetic information with other fungi, like meeting someone and saying, “Oh, I like the way you play the piano. I’ll have that,” and then just acquiring that trait. They confuse normal systems of taxonomy, which makes it hard for them to be categorized and ordered but also quite fun to think about them. Because of all this there’s a a lot yet to be discovered about fungi so there’s a sense of excitement when beginning to do work in fungal fields. There’s a broad type of fungus known as mycorrhizal fungi. They’re called mycorrhizal because they relate to plant roots. “Myco” means fungus and “rhiza / rhizal” means roots, so “root fungus.” They grow very intimately into and around plant roots and extend outward into the soil. They provide nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen to plants that have trouble getting them on their own in exchange for sugars that the fungus can’t make or can’t make easily by itself. Mycorrhizal fungi are very ancient and nearly all plants have formed some kind of relationship with them.1 They’re thought to be responsible for helping plants make it onto land in the very first instance 400 million years ago when plants were free-floating photosynthetic organisms in the sea.2 They would wash up onto the shore in these inter-tidal zones and begin to photosynthesize, making energy from light and carbon dioxide, but they weren’t so good at absorbing nutrients from the rock substrate they found themselves on. Fortunately, there were fungi growing around these rocks that could digest some of the substrate, and the two began a relationship that still stands, exchanging minerals for sugars. A lot of people compare mycorrhizal networks to the internet but there are some big differences. First of all, mycorrhizal networks consist of interactions between trees and fungi and the question is, Do the trees connect the fungi together or do the fungi connect the trees together? Are you a myco-centrist, someone who puts fungi in the middle, or a phyto-centrist, someone who puts plants in the middle? These are all very live questions right now. The internet, by comparison, connects human agents with hardware via wires. These connections are passive. They are not, of themselves, living creatures with agency. With fungal networks, the connections are living. Either a tree is actively connecting to a fungi or a fungus is connecting to trees. The system is much more complicated than the internet because you have agents connecting agents connecting agents. The internet likeness makes sense on a superficial level but fungal networks are much more complex and interesting. DIRECTIONAL

This phrase “the wood wide web” is a helpful one because it communicates an idea of connected organisms very quickly. In Panama I was studying these plants called mycoheterotrophs, which are unlike normal plants because they don’t have chlorophyll which means they don’t photosynthesize. The question is, “Well, how do they survive?” because photosynthesis is how plants produce energy from light and carbon dioxide. We found that these plants don’t produce their own energy at all; they plug into fungal networks and acquire sugars and nutrients from other plants via the fungi.3 Conventional plants in the wood wide web would be feeding things into the network and receiving things back from the fungi. These plants don’t do that, which is why I jokingly call them “hackers.” It’s a great example of the many ways that different plants and fungi behave within these networks. These are multivalent, complex systems with as many unique ways of engagement as we can imagine. Importantly, the relationship between mycorrhizal fungi and plants is generally thought of as mutualistic, where both partners benefit, although there are times when one plant or fungal partner might be getting more than the other, so it’s flexible, it’s fluid. When we think about these exchanges, the question comes up of what governs them. How are these exchange between plants and fungi regulated, controlled, and negotiated? Because humans tend to project their own ideas on to the natural world, some use “biological market” theories to explain them. These are based on capitalist market frameworks using concepts like commodities and terms of trade. Others are more charitable and grant more generosity to the players, describing them as caregivers who donate to and feed those who don’t have enough—a traditionally more socialist framework. All well and good but they are still human-sourced and don’t replace the fact that we don’t yet have a sophisticated understanding of how these fungal networks are behaving that may not reflect a human framework. It’s another reason why mycology is fascinating and not just to academics. I meet lots of people who are naturally interested in fungi and are very keen to discuss them. Many of my peers and young people I know are also concerned with issues of environmental degradation and see mycology and areas like environmental regeneration as solutions. Certainly they are hot topics and so those who are interested in sustainable futures might be drawn to fungi. There are no end of unanswered questions about fungi which makes working in fields of science or investigation a lot of fun. The field is more open. There’s plenty of room for inquiry. NOTES 1. INTRODUCTION BY DR. SYLVIA A. EARLE

THROUGH STUNNING BLACK-AND-WHITE IMAGES,

award-winning photographer Christian Vizl uses a masterful control of light and shadow to portray the creatures of the sea as they are rarely seen, at home in the ethereal world beneath the waves. Capturing a range of underseas scenes and moods— from the ferocity of sharks to the playful dance of dolphins—Vizl turns aquatic creatures and marine seascapes into visions of sublime grace and beauty suspended in time and space. With each turn of the page, venture deeper into the one realm in which humans do not reign and discover an unforgettable world that few have ever seen. Though the ocean covers more than 70 percent of planet Earth, over 80 percent of that vast underwater wilderness remains unexplored. As the impact of human activity reaches these once-untouched regions, it is more important than ever to acknowledge both the preciousness of our seas and the necessity of protecting one of Earth’s last truly wild frontiers. Silent Kingdom is both an ode to the beauty of the ocean and the magnificent creatures that inhabit it and a call to action to preserve our planet’s fragile underwater world.

THE BEATLES IN INDIA PHOTOGRAPHY AND TEXT BY PAUL SALTZMAN FOREWORD BY PATTIE BOYD PREFACE BY TIM B. WRIDE AFTERWORD BY DONOVAN LEITCH

In 1968, the Beatles went to Rishikesh, India, studied transcendental meditation, and wrote music. These intimate photos are the only record of their time at this sacred retreat.

This new edition of The Beatles in India brings intimate images of the group, taken at an ashram in Rishikesh, India, to a wider audience than ever before and commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the famous trip. No photographers or press were allowed at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas, but the Beatles had no objection to fellow visitor Paul Saltzman freely snapping pictures during their time there. This unprecedented access resulted in an extensive collection of intimate photos of the world’s most beloved rock band during one of their most serene and productive periods—and only two years before the official dissolution of the group. Containing a wide-ranging narrative by Saltzman—about everything from the story of how “Dear Prudence” came to be to George Harrison’s description of the first time he picked up a sitar—this unique and exclusive exploration of one of the Beatles’ tenderest and most bittersweet periods is a must-have for all fans of the legendary rock group.

EARTH IS MY WITNESS The Photography of Art Wolfe

NEW FORMAT

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ART WOLFE INTRODUCTION BY WADE DAVIS

This collection represents what Wolfe has lived for: moments when circumstance, light, and subject miraculously collide to form an iconic image.

Art Wolfe’s definitive opus, Earth Is My Witness represents 40 years of expeditionary photography. For the first time, Wolfe presents the three subjects at the heart of his work—landscapes, wildlife, and cultures on the edge of extinction—in a single masterpiece that takes us through the world’s ecosystems and geographical regions in a vivid display of the fragility and interconnectivity of life on Earth, while simultaneously exploring his evolution as an artist and the techniques he uses to capture the nuances and rhythms of nature.

NUBIA TEIXEIRA PHOTOGRAPHY BY

ANDREA BOSTON

Yoga and the Art of Mudras is a guided journey into the alchemy of asana (yoga pose) and mudra (symbolic hand gesture). Brazilianborn yogi, dancer, and author Nubia Teixeira has been practicing and teaching traditional yoga and classical Indian Odissi dance for over 26 years. In this book, she fuses her passion for yoga and dance with her love for bhakti (devotion). In so doing, she has created a unique and contemporary yoga system that encompasses all three healing arts. Through beautiful photographs of each yoga pose, Nubia guides the reader in a meaningful union of hand gestures with asanas. Drawing, in particular, on expressions and hand gestures found in Indian dance, these newly developed poses will help transform a person’s hatha yoga practice into an embodied devotional and artistic yogic experience. Nubia’s yoga-mudra system combines expressions that are deeply rooted in the heart of traditional yoga, classical Indian Odissi dance, and inspirational bhakti yoga storytelling. Honoring the gifts of all three systems, Nubia shares a beautiful and truly original voyage into the heart of devotional yoga practice. 24

Because Ganesha has traveled into the realm of death, after his father Shiva initiated him in the mysteries of dying, Ganesha knows how life is precious and takes any opportunity he has to celebrate life. Now, transfer the weight of your body to your left foot while moving your right foot forward, opening your right knee out and pointing your right foot to the earth. Stay still and stand joyfully in this asana.

King Kubera was the greediest man in the world. Hated and feared by many, he schemed to win the love of the beautiful goddess Parvati but learned an important lesson when he invited her elephant-headed son Ganesha over for lunch one day. . . . So goes one of the many delightful tales in this decidedly grown-up book of traditional Indian stories, retold for the modern reader.

o goes one of the many delightful tales in this decidedly grown-up book of traditional Indian stories, retold for the modern reader. Author Kamla K. Kapur is well known in her native India as a poet and playwright, and her connection to these age-old stories is the reverent yet individualistic one we might expect from someone whose introduction tells of her hometown, where naked, dreadlocked holy men speed about on motorbikes. To collect these stories, Kapur relied on ancient sacred texts, modern scholarship, and chance encounters with interesting people who just happened to know a really good one about this time that Vishnu sank into the ocean, was incarnated as a pig, and had a really wonderful time. Like myths around the world, these are teaching stories that offer both a window into a fascinating culture that has endured for thousands of years, and a code for living that can be applied to the modern world. Whether you read these engaging tales for monkey gods, talking toads, and beautiful maidens in distress . . . or for an Eastern viewpoint on the eternal questions surrounding love, friendship, faith, happiness, and war, this is a book that bears repeated reading, and is a fine addition to any collection.

KARMA A Guide to Cause and Effect BY JEFFREY ARMSTRONG

Beyond the physical practice, yoga is an ancient, sacred tradition of conscious living and higher awareness. This holistic practice encompasses physical health and well-being, psychological and emotional harmony, and general balance in life. More importantly, yoga is a spiritual quest to know the inner truth of the universe: the Divine, God, the Absolute, or any other name one may use to refer to this highest value. This compelling introduction provides the essential tools readers need to embark on a spiritual quest to deepen their yoga practice.

In this compelling and in-depth introduction to the ancient Hindu concept of karma, spiritual teacher and award-winning author Jeffrey Armstrong explores reincarnation, the deeper mysteries of the soul, the laws of nature, and the ways in which cause and effect influence our lives. Moving beyond Western perceptions of science and luck, Armstrong explores the mystical balance of the universe. These long-secret laws of karma, excavated from the ancient wisdom of India, offer a means to deepen one’s spiritual vision and reveal the profoundly interconnected nature of all that exists.

CONTACT YOGA The Seven Points of Connection & Relationship

YOGA AND VEGETARIANISM The Diet of Enlightenment

BY TARA LYNDA GUBER & ANODEA JUDITH

BY SHARON GANNON

BY JANICE GATES

Contact Yoga explores that mysterious and dynamic edge where two people connect: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Tara Lynda Guber and Anodea Judith offer valuable insight into the dynamics of all loving relationships, using poses designed for two participants that bridge the seven points of contact.

According to Sharon Gannon, the single most important part of your yoga practice is the strict adherence to a vegetarian diet—a diet free of needless cruelty, harm, and injustice. Gannon offers truth and wisdom from a tradition of spiritual practice thousands of years old and explains how to apply these practices to our modern lifestyles.

Yogini is created by women, for not only women but all who have a passion for yoga as a path and a way of life. It offers inspiration and a fresh perspective for everyone’s yoga or spiritual practice.

$14.95 Paperback 5.5 × 7.5 144 pages ISBN: 978-1-60109-021-8 If you preface your asana practice with the intention to resolve past relationships, then, while you are in each asana, allow the experience to help you remember those past relationships. If pain, doubt, or tightness arise, give silent blessings to the others in your life. The following descriptions might help you to reflect on the power of asana practice to heal relationships by resolving them into love, forgiveness, and blessing while on the mat.

2nd chakra: SWaDhIShThaNa (her Favorite Standing Place) Forward bends Karmic relationships: Creative, artistic, romantic, and sexual partners

y

ou can purify your creative/sexual relationships by letting go of anger, blame, and resentment. Through practice, you will come to realize that the way others treat you is coming from how you have treated others in your past. Forward bending takes you into your past with an opportunity to reflect and heal through letting go of resentful feelings you may be holding against past partners.

1st chakra: mulaDhaRa (Root Place) Standing Poses Karmic relationships: Mother Earth, nature, parents, home, job, money, boss, workplace

The practice of forward bending develops creativity and removes sorrow and envy.

y

our spiritual journey begins with acknowledging your physicality through devotion to the Great Goddess, Mother Nature. If you cannot be at peace with your parents and feel contentment with your body, home, and job, you won’t be able to evolve. You purify the foundation by seeing all of life as sacred. Your connection to the Earth must be based in steadiness and joy, not only for yourself, but also for the whole world and all beings.

3rd chakra: maNIPuRa (Jewel in the city) Twists Karmic relationships: Others you have hurt (especially focus on animals you may have eaten or caused to be harmed)

The practice of standing poses develops stability and removes fear.

T

wisting asanas provide a great opportunity to reflect upon the food you have eaten and the other animal beings you may have harmed in the process. Acknowledge your unwitting selfishness and ask for forgiveness. Don’t feel guilty. What you have already done in your past is done; you cannot change that, but you can move forward in a new and more compassionate way, starting now. Realize that when you hurt others, it is coming from a lack of self-confidence. This practice provides the means to remedy that.

The practice of twists develops confidence and removes anger. appendix 3: Yoga on the Mat

SWAMI IN A STRANGE LAND

How Krishna Came to the West

NEW FORMAT

BY JOSHUA M. GREENE

In 1965, a 70-year-old man—soon to be known as Prabhupada— set sail from India to America with a few books in his bag, pennies in his pockets, and a message of love in his heart. He landed in New York at the peak of the revolutionary counterculture movement of the ’60s and went on to spark a global spiritual renaissance that led to the creation of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which has changed millions of lives. Carefully researched, skillfully crafted, and extraordinarily intimate, this narrative follows Prabhupada as he rises from an anonymous monk to a world-renowned spiritual leader, inspiring icons such as George Harrison and Allen Ginsberg.

riginally released during the zenith of the music scene in the sixties, My Music, My Life has been updated with stunning contemporary photographs, a new foreword by Philip Glass and a new chapter from Ravi Shankar on his perspective today. My Music, My Life chronicles the extraordinary career of the man who may be India’s best-known musician and one of the greatest sitar players of all time. Ravi Shankar has been performing throughout the world for more than six decades. Through a close mentoring relationship with Beatle George Harrison in the sixties, Shankar expanded his reach beyond that of any typical classical musician. He performed at Woodstock in 1969 and helped to organize the legendary Concert for Bangladesh in 1971.

Foreword by Philip Glass

Introduction by Yehudi Menuhin

In his own words, Shankar describes his transformation from a young traveling dancer to a Grammy Award-winning, internationally recognized musician. An autobiography, a history of Indian classical music and a manual on how to play the sitar, this book is as much about music as a lifestyle as it is about music as an art.

A CENTURY OF SACRED ART (1870–1970)

Adapted from ancient Sanskrit texts, the stories in Beauty, Power, & Grace represent one of the most fundamental aspects of Hinduism—the innumerable manifestations of divinity. These profound stories are brought together in an exquisitely illustrated collection that reveals the various manifestations of the Goddess, ranging from the iconic to the obscure.

Steeped in India’s ancient Vedic cosmology, these prayerful, captivating paintings contain a complete who’s who of the Hindu pantheon. Ganesh, Shiva, Laxmi, and Krishna come alive as divine forms in this unique and richly colored work.

Gods in Print is the first comprehensive collection of early hand-colored lithographs, multiple-block chromolithographs, and offset print images of India’s world of gods and goddesses.
