I’m just back from a week in Bangkok attending the ACL Conference with Translated. 𝐓𝐋;𝐃𝐑 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚-𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧’ Now, let me get philosophical/existential. For those of you not familiar, ACL (the Association for Computational Linguistics) is the preeminent research conference in the field of Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Today, you probably know these things better as AI 😉 Though as the ACL’s presidential address went on to state: “𝘈𝘊𝘓 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘈𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦”. This has stoked some debate online that I’m not going to wade into. Seek it out for yourself if you’re curious! 𝘈𝘯𝘺𝘸𝘢𝘺, this was the 62nd annual conference and there were almost 5,000 people in attendance, mostly in person with some online. In terms of the content, this one was a bit different than before, but I’m not sure if that’s a positive. The program is broken up different research areas on applications of NLP: machine translation, information extraction, question answering, speech recognition, etc. These applications have typically been underpinned by quite distinct approaches to research with respect to algorithms and how to generally address the challenges and solve problems. That’s changed. Things felt a bit homogenous. Regardless of the task, the approach was is almost exclusively to use LLMs to address the problem, and research focused on either how to fine tune an existing foundational model for a certain task, or carry out some sort of evaluation. The issue is kind of practical. Fundamental research on foundational model training is essentially restricted to a limited set of groups who have the capacity to do this, and everyone else has to feed off that (that is not in any way to diminish the quality of that work!) I’m not yet sure if that’s a good thing. Obviously, it makes complete sense if this approach is ultimately leading to better outcomes. But I can't help but feel we’re also losing something by not specialising in certain tasks. Maybe we’ll get there when we run out of steam (hit a ceiling) with performance on fine-tuned foundational models. Or maybe we won’t need to! That said, there was cause for optimism in that it seems like we’re already focusing on the right stuff off the bat - namely low resource languages and recognising that these large models are great, but not necessarily multilingually. This was reflected in the keynote presentations, some of the conference satellite workshops and tutorials, and also in many of the papers in the proceedings. Personally speaking, it was also great to meet again with some of the “old guard” of machine translation in Lucia, Marcello, Philipp and others. The Translated team of myself, Alessandro, and Enrico were also on hand to share copies of our new Imminent Report and promote our $100,000 of research grants. More info in the first comment below. Thank you for reading my Ted Talk.

🎉 From August 11 to 16, we'll be attending the annual meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (#ACL2024) in Bangkok. ACL is the premier forum for exploring the latest advances in computational linguistics and natural language processing. This year's conference, which we are proud to sponsor, will focus on the latest developments in open science, open data, and open models for reproducible NLP research. Our Vice President of AI Solutions, John Tinsley, and our Head of Data Science, Alessandro Zinnai, will be attending in person. If you're also planning to attend, please feel free to reach out to them in advance. Enrico Boscardi, Imminent Project Manager, will also attend the conference to present Imminent's new research grants, an initiative to explore the most advanced frontiers in language services. #l10n #t9n #localization #AI #languageAI #MT #ML

Humans and AI: the challenge of languages. In June we had the pleasure of hosting at our headquarters in Rome the 4th edition of the Imminent Unconference. During this 4th chapter of the unconference experts in the #localization industry from all over the world delved into 4 topics from the emergence of BRIC countries as dominant economic player and the consequences on the loc world to the necessary change of localization tools with the advent of LLM based technologies. We would like to thank again everyone who partook in these discussions, here you can find the key highlights of the discussions: https://lnkd.in/dgy74W59

AI Engineer & Researcher @ Translated | MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending #ICML (International Conference on Machine Learning) in Vienna. These have been intense days during which I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the state-of-the-art of AI, the field I'm passionate about. The huge number of researchers from all over the world, oral presentations, and papers were overwhelming, and I loved it! The best part was sharing this experience with my colleagues and friends Davide Caroselli and Enrico Boscardi. Together, we spread the word about Translated’s Imminent grant (if you're a researcher in the language field looking for funding, check it out: https://lnkd.in/dPu5GnPp). My favourite event was the poster sessions because they gave me the opportunity to talk directly with the authors. These conversations allowed us to clarify doubt, share thoughts and build connections with exceptional researchers. Overall, ICML was an incredible experience. I left Vienna feeling inspired, with new insights and a looong list of papers I want to read. I'm looking forward to go deeper with them and applying what I've learned in practice. #ICML2024 #MachineLearning #AI #ResearchConference
