動物に寄生する寄生バチは、いわゆる[[狩りバチ]]と幼虫が昆虫などを生きながら食べ尽くす点ではよく似ている。相違点は、典型的な狩りバチでは雌親が獲物を麻酔し、それを自分が作った巣に確保する点である。その点、寄生バチは獲物（宿主）を麻酔せず、またそれを運んで巣穴に隠すこともない。しかし中間的なもの（[[エメラルドゴキブリバチ]]・[[サトセナガアナバチ]]など）が存在し、おそらく寄生バチから狩りバチが進化したと考えられる。
幼虫の形態に関しても、ハバチ類では[[チョウ]]などによく似た[[イモムシ]]として自由生活を送るのに対し、寄生バチを含むハチ目の他属ではいずれも付属肢や感覚器の退化傾向が著しく、自由生活能力に乏しい点も、寄生生活への適応に由来するものと考えられる。
