1897年に[[ニュージーランド大学]]の1校として開校。正式名称は、ヴィクトリア大学・オブ・ウェリントン。[[ヴィクトリア_(イギリス女王)|イギリス女王ヴィクトリア]]の名前に由来する。ニュージーランド国内では、ヴィクトリア大学、または、ヴィクトリアの名で呼ばれ
