コリン・マッギン

コリン・マッギン(Colin McGinn、1950年3月10日-) は、イギリスの哲学者。心の哲学のなかでは、認知的閉鎖(cognitive closure)説を提唱し、人間が意識の謎（意識のハード・プロブレム）を解明する可能性に懐疑的な新神秘主義者として知られる。

業績

マッギンは哲学的論理学、形而上学、言語哲学について数多くの論文を執筆しているが、彼の名は心の哲学において最もよく知られている。1989年に書かれた彼の論文「私たちは心身問題を解決できるのか？( "Can We Solve the Mind-Body Problem?")においてマッギンは、人間の心は生得的にそれ自身を理解することが不可能なのであり、この不可能性によってデカルト以来の西洋哲学は意識の謎に取りつかれてきたのだと考察した。したがって、マッギンによる意識のハード・プロブレムへの解答とは、意識の謎は人間にとって認知的に閉じられており、解答不可能だというものである。このような立場は新神秘主義 (New Mysterianism)と呼ばれている
