Travel made safer by NEC! Optical fiber for communications already exists along expressways and other roads throughout the world. However, NEC is enhancing these fibers with proprietary AI that enables road conditions, such as traffic congestion and extreme temperatures, to be monitored in real time.   NEC’s Optical Fiber Sensing Technology detects a wide range of large and small vibrations, including the vibrations from a vehicle’s tires. When this information is analyzed by AI, it can provide important details about entire roadways, including how many vehicles are on the road and at what speeds they are travelling.   Furthermore, NEC technology can detect irregular lane changes by vehicles travelling in the same direction, enabling it to detect abnormalities on the road, such as fallen trees. The effectiveness of these technologies have even been confirmed by Japan’s Central Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO CENTRAL), one of the country’s main operators of expressways and toll roads.   NEC’s digital understanding of roadway conditions and vehicle movements contributes to the safety and security of travelers every day. 🚗🚜🚛 NEC will present a paper on this smart optical fiber technology at ITS World Congress 2024 in Dubai, starting Monday, September 16. NEC Corporation has published the ESG Databook 2024, a report on its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives from April 2023 onwards. The main initiatives outlined in the ESG Databook 2024 are as follows: Utilization of Sustainability Information Disclosure Standards, initiatives to reduce capital costs, measures to strengthen security for NEC and society, as well as activities to uphold corporate governance and maintain inclusion in major ESG indices. We held an app development hackathon using NEC's generative AI service, "cotomi", with the participation of students from Tokyo Institute of Technology（Tokyo Tech） and Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Approximately 40 students participated in the hackathon, developing various ideas and prototypes in line with the theme 'LLM-based problem-solving applications'. Presentations and judging were held on September 11th, and the winning team was determined.   Congratulations to the winning team! We were impressed by their excellent ideas and technical skills. To all participating teams: thank you for showcasing so many captivating proposals. Your enthusiasm and creativity were truly inspiring.   This event's success wouldn't have been possible without the support of everyone involved. The NEC Group's space development business began in 1956, leveraging the technologies it had developed through its telecommunications business. The establishment of the Aerospace Development Division in 1965 paved the way for the NEC Group to launch a full-scale space development business. 🚀 In 1966, NEC delivered the prototype model for the first scientific satellite. Then, in July of that same year, it formed a Satellite Department within the Aerospace Development Division, solidifying NEC’s satellite development program. And in 1970, all of this culminated with the advent of Ohsumi, Japan’s first satellite. 📡 In 1987, MOMO-1, Japan’s first Earth observation satellite for marine phenomena, was launched. We are happy to announce that NEC has launched a new system using Biometric Authentication Technology. This system quickly authenticates large groups of people on the move and reduces congestion.
