SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 629
Celebrating the life of Colin Goetze Campbell.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, July 1, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Colin Goetze Campbell, former president and chief executive officer of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and a beloved member of the Williamsburg community, died on June 21, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1957 and a juris doctor degree from Columbia Law School in 1960 before serving as vice president of the American Stock Exchange; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell joined the staff at Wesleyan University in 1967 and three years later became the youngest president in the school's history; he went on to lead the institution until 1988, when he became president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, overseeing the organization's global philanthropic endeavors for the next 12 years; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell became president and chief executive officer of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 2000 and served in this capacity until 2014, when he became chairman emeritus; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell ably steered the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation through the economic challenges of the early 2000s while spearheading a number of initiatives that transformed the cultural institution in the areas of preservation, education, and civic engagement; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell is credited with spurring a number of construction projects in the Colonial Williamsburg historic area, developing more extensive and inclusive educational programming for visitors, and fostering meaningful institutional partnerships that contributed to the foundation's fulfillment of its mission; and

WHEREAS, the Colin G. and Nancy N. Campbell Archaeology Center, which is expected to open in 2026, was named in Colin Campbell and his wife's honor and serves as a testament to Colin Campbell's enduring legacy at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell was the recipient of many prestigious accolades over the years in recognition of his exemplary service and civic engagement, including the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's Churchill Bell award and The College of William & Mary's Prentis Award; and

WHEREAS, Colin Campbell will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Nancy; his children, Betsy, Jennifer, Colin, and Blair, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Colin Goetze Campbell, distinguished leader of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation whose unwavering dedication to the cultural institution left an indelible impact on Williamsburg and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colin Goetze Campbell as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
