I was horrified by the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. It is the culmination of the hateful and untrue rhetoric made toward Trump and his campaign for president. He has been called an extremist, terrorist and existential threat to democracy. He was even compared to Adolph Hitler.
A specific motive for the shooting hasn't been determined. We may never know, as the 20-year-old shooter was killed by the Secret Service after he shot Trump.
But the hateful speech against Trump is very apparent. It seems as though politics has left the realm of reality and gone to lies and character assassination, rather than dealing in policy positions, plans and facts.
President Joe Biden’s character also has been attacked. The time is now to turn off the very personal attacks and negative rhetoric on all the presidential candidates.

Civility must be the rule of the day. I’m calling on everyone to think about the effect their comments might have. I encourage everyone to join me in demanding an end to the personal attacks that may become fodder for those wishing to do harm.
