Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 10 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

Discussion

As you can see in the calendar (I moved your request to March), there are already two campaigns scheduled for the March period that may overlap with the period you are requesting. Wiki Loves Africa is for the African continent, Celebrate Women I expect to also be aimed at the French speaking writers.

For Central Notice admins, who need to balance these campaigns, it will be helpful to have a more details about the campaign. "French-speaking countries" is not very specific: can you make a list of the preferred countries? And are you in touch with WLA already about your campaign running at the same time? I realize that yours is about article creation and WLA is a photography contest, but from the participants and readers perspective it is good to not have to many banners fighting for their attention at the same time. :) Ciell (talk) 18:44, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, please help us to understand the difference to CentralNotice/Request/Mois de la contribution francophone 2024. Do you have multiple months of contributing? Can the previous campaign be reused or adjusted? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:57, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer, as you can see, it is the same, we don't have multiple months. The first call was for organizers, now we want to invite people to attend events organizers created.
@Ciellas you have noticed, WLA is about photo contest whereas ours is about writing one. There's not at all a conflict on that matter. For sure, I agree with you for readers perspective. Would it be possible to end ours on March 15 ? BamLifa (talk) 13:09, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@BamLifa: Ciell has meant that the banners will still be conflicting with each other. Although we can add to the settings the character of the campaign, it's only a few people who have actually submitted their interests. Those who are interested in both and those who didn't submit preferences (the large majority of all contributors), will see both campaigns at the same time. I'm open to create the campaign nonetheless (end with 15 March is okay), but the issue of targeted languages still remains open. I assume that you only want to reach French-speaking countries and not all, right? We need a list for that, thanks. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:01, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits. Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 08:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DerHexer you handled this last year right? Do you have time to coordinate again? Ciell (talk) 18:51, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, Jon organized it himself. I hope that he will do it for this year again. ;) And as far as I know, they want to reuse the campaign of last year. —DerHexer (Talk) 19:13, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Description - Call for participation to Wiki Loves Africa 2024.

The banner is to promote the Wiki Loves Africa photo campaign. It is a call for participation. It is pretty much unchanged compared to previous years. The contest is open for 2 months. We run the banner only in Africa (though the contest is open everywhere). Every year, 90% or so of our participants are new (and some are retained there after !), so running the banner for IP addresses is very important as it serves as recruitment system for new participants. The contest runs over all African countries. In some countries (around 30), local teams will organize activities. They are very much in ask for the banners (both because it helps promote the contest in countries where wikipedia is not very well known) and because it makes them feel we take them seriously (and we do of course...).

I had a go at this, but it looks like it's still * a bit* out of my league. Happy to have another CN admin take over. :) Ciell (talk) 19:41, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Anthere and OtuNwachinemere: Can you please provide an SVG version of c:File:Logo + puzzle.svg without white space left and right? This would help us to build the banner. Other than that, Ciell's version looks pretty good to me. Thanks, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:21, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer@Ciell: Apologies for the delay - you should find the c:File:Logo + puzzle.svg updated with no whitespace included. Please can you proceed. I agree, if we can fix that left logo, then we are good to go!! Thank you, as always, Islahaddow (talk) 11:29, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That looks way better! :-D Ciell (talk) 13:17, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've created the campaign and attached the banner. As soon as you approve it, we can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 14:07, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer - thank you for this. Could you please let me have a link to a visual of the banner. I cannot find a visual on the two links you shared. Perhaps my brain fog is getting the better of me ;-). Thanks again for this monumental work! Islahaddow (talk) 07:43, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: to be clear, the 'preview' on the Banner page doesn't seem to work. Hence the problem. Thanks again, Islahaddow (talk) 07:45, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Islahaddow: It's the same link as in Ciell's first message in this section which is why I didn't link it again. —DerHexer (Talk) 07:49, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is perfect!! Let's go with it. Thank you @DerHexer and @Ciell - so appreciate the help! Islahaddow (talk) 10:21, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It seems generally good to me. I have checked countries and it seems we are missing ZW (compared to last year). DerHexer ?
Last year languages were more numerous, this year only en, fr, ar and pt. Which seems fine by me. Anthere (talk) 13:25, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Anthere: I've added ZW and enabled the campaign. “En, Fr, Pt, Ar, African languages (to be specified a bit later...)” is not specific enough so that I could add some more languages. Just let me know what else has to be added. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:47, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Thanks ! We will sort out a list of specific local languages a bit later. Anthere (talk) 13:00, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Ritamaliqi: Please request banner campaign at least 10 days before the start of the campaign as per CentralNotice/Request. Often we need to give advice on what to do before we can enable the campaign.
    • In your case, “What countries will your campaign target? sq, en, sv, de, fr, nl, it, es, pt, no, fi, da & ar” makes no sense. These are language codes and not country names. Please provide both: language codes and country names.
    • For larger communities, a local notification would be required when anonymous users in a wide range of countries would be targeted.
    • Please also provide translations in the banner and landing page in all the languages you want to reach. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:38, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer thank you for the information, as it is our first time requesting an central notice banner. Next campaign we will provide all the requested details on time. Ritamaliqi (talk) 08:51, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritamaliqi: No worries, I can still create the campaign but I will need the requested information on countries, and you can still let the local communities know about the campaign and start with translations. Does this make sense? :) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:50, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @DerHexer I just added the requested information on countries. Ritamaliqi (talk) 10:07, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritamaliqi: Thanks for that! You intend to target anonymous users in many large countries where other campaigns currently take place (see CentralNotice/Calendar, please let the organizers of the other campaigns and the local village pumps know that this campaign is planned and might overlap with others. For global campaigns, local ambassadors are recommended who can spread the word to their communities so that you are not on your own with preparations. In case that's too much work for now, is there a chance to postpone the campaign and look for a better time and give yourself more time for preparation? Otherwise I fear that this will be learnings for the next edition. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 12:23, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, it's been a while since last time I requested a CentralNotice campaign, so if I forgot something, let me know!

We would love to advertise our next online event, the Wikidata Leveling Up Days, targetted at people who want to learn more about Wikidata. We would like to have it running on Wikidata, Commons, Wikipedia, Wikivoyage and Wikisource, for logged-in users only, from March 25 to April 14. Although the event is taking place in English, most content will be released in advance in video on Commons so people can add translated captions.

If something's wrong with the proposed banner, please help me fix it. Many thanks in advance, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:41, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lea Lacroix (WMDE)! A few notes/questions:
  • You've requested that this be shown in all languages. In effect, this means it would be shown to logged-in users on every Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, Commons, and Wikidata. Given that the event is taking place (only?) in English, and that the landing page isn't even translatable, this is not okay. We should, as much as is reasonably possible, not be showing English banners to people whose interface language is not English. If English-language ability is required to participate in the event, it should be shown only in English. If it is able to be supported in more languages, relevant content/instructions/etc. should be available in those languages. (see guidelines on "relevant targets")
  • Did you notify the target wikis of the banner request? Considering your request is for ~500 wikis, I'm assuming no, so I'd recommend notifying the relevant wikis after you've adjusted which wikis you want to run this on. (see guidelines, "The target wikis should be notified of the Meta-Wiki discussion...")
  • There are 6 WMDE staff accounts with the CentralNotice administrator right. There are fewer volunteer CN admins. Can one of your staff facilitate this request?
Best regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 17:04, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Vermont, thanks a lot for your reply. I just wanted to mention that we can put this request on hold while I'm discussing with my colleagues and see how I can reduce the scope of the banner and work on improvements. Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 13:41, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • A tiny friendly FYI for everyone involved, incl. @Ciell, I'm only helping out with the banner's code as part of introducing @Sara to the world of CN. On a side note, I've removed the underscore from the CTA, because it was also bolded (it's like a general good practice - one way of emphasis is sufficient). I'd also consider removing the special color on hover on CTA since in fact, the entire banner is clickable. Formatting the CTA differently may be slightly misleading - it may suggest that there's a linked area within a different linked area. Thanks! Hi @Janbery, I've created your campaign and banner. Could you please review, and also test your banner on different devices (mobile, laptop, etc)?

I notice a few differences from previous years in your request (2022 example), mainly that you want to target Commons and Wikidata as well, even though it is not clear that your article writing campaign WikiGap has expanded it's scope. Please make sure to only target those projects that are interested in the campaign: it's easy to 'overuse' the powerful tool of CentralNotice banner and it will use its power if we do. Ciell (talk) 14:06, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've reduced the size of the loaded images. It's not necessary to import the full 4.5 MB file for each banner display when it's shown in a much smaller size anyway. ;) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:37, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, thanks DerHexer! Ciell (talk) 19:42, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ciell, thank you for creating the request. We can drop Wikidata, but I'd like to keep Commons in. WikiGap is mostly focused on articles, but we'we given out special prizes to photographers before. You are right, let's not waste this tool for everyone! I will edit the request above.
I did some checking on both mobile and pc, it looks good to me. I'll send it out to my colleagues so we have more devices/configs tested. I will let you know when we have testing done.
DerHexer, thank you for the edit, I must admit that I'm still somewhat learning this stuff.

  • @Mauricio V. Genta and TAndic (WMF): Mauricio, please check back with Tanja about the survey and your survey tool as per CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines#Surveys. In the meantime, I will create the campaign and banner. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @DerHexer :). @TAndic (WMF) We are using the same LimeSurvey provider as WMF, and it is configured so that it does not save timestamps, IP addresses and referrer URLs. Email, username and nationality are non mandatory answers. Thanks! Mauricio V. Genta (talk) 04:34, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Mauricio V. Genta, very nice to hear about your LimeSurvey privacy settings!
    My comments:
    In the survey:
    • You should clearly state next to the contact information questions what you will use it for and how you will use it
    • Minor note: Some editors might not know what GLAM means, you might want to define it in your survey

Privacy policy (should exist on a wiki and be linked to within the survey):
    • The purpose of the survey (including what the contact information is being gathered for)
    • What data the survey collects. (It can be something like "This survey only collects data from the responses that you provide." (meaning no IPs or other browsing data))
    • External data processing: "LimeSurvey is used to collect responses or registrations; please read their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service." (feel welcome to use whatever wording you wish, just make sure to link to their privacy policy and terms of service in whatever wording you use)
    • How long the data will be retained (raw and de-identified data; usually it's 90 days for raw data, and then de-identified is depending on the use case -- usually just until the project is done and data is analyzed and reported, but sometimes it makes sense to keep it indefinitely)
    • If and where findings will be published
    • Who is conducting the survey, along with contact information for where to ask questions or if someone wants their response removed.

You can have all of the privacy policy displayed in your survey as well, it's just important to have a space where people can refer back to if they need to once the survey is over. Ideally they should be able to look at the privacy statement and find out about the project before clicking the survey at all (see the nice WM Chile example below, where the banner linked to a wiki landing page rather than directly to the survey).

    Some nice recent examples:

Once you have a privacy statement ready and linked within your survey, I give my approval :) -- TAndic (WMF) (talk) 12:48, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TAndic (WMF) It is done! I created a page on Meta: https://w.wiki/9Bkb and updated de information in the limesurvey. Let me know if a missed something, thanks! Mauricio V. Genta (talk) 14:46, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great, @Mauricio V. Genta, thank you for the quick update! @DerHexer, all good on my side, thank you so much! -- TAndic (WMF) (talk) 14:57, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Description -
Wiki Loves Folklore, an annual international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons from February 1st to March 31st, serves as a global initiative to amass a diverse collection of media. The primary objective is to contribute content to Wikipedia and other online platforms, all under free licenses. The contest focuses on capturing and showcasing unique images that represent and document the intangible cultural heritage of various communities worldwide.

Structured with both national coordinators and an International Team, the campaign ensures comprehensive coverage. National coordinators, responsible for organizing Wiki Loves Folklore within their respective countries, play a vital role in fostering local participation. Simultaneously, the International Team steps in to organize the contest in countries lacking designated national coordinators, thereby addressing the representation gap within the Wikimedia ecosystem.

Project Korikath is planning to arrange c:Commons:Wiki Loves Folklore 2024 in Bangladesh and we are also planning to submit a central notice request that will cover all wikimedia projects, languages, both logged in and anonymous users and users visiting from Bangladesh. The timeline is the same as the international WLF central notice timeline. Should I request for a separate central notice or it can be somehow coordinated with this one? -- BIDROHI Hello.. 10:24, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mrb Rafi, if it is the same project then yes you should coordinate it here, so we can coordinate having your banner for users from Bangladesh, and the main banner for other users. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 01:05, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually...it seems there were some issues with country-specific requests previously. Ping DerHexer, who handled it last year; are you okay setting this up like last year's? Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 01:09, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment Comment Just an idea, but maybe the WLF team can benefit from having someone with the appropriate user-rights on the team that handles the CN banners. Because all this kind of country- and language specific coordination could (imho: should) all have been done before a campaign goes live. Please consider this as a suggestion for improvement for WLF 2025. Ciell (talk) 10:47, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you @Ciell for your suggestions. Our teammate @Nokib Sarkar would be the best candidate as he is more into the banners and technical stuffs. --Tiven2240 (talk) 16:59, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nokib Sarkar: here is more information about the rules of procedure for CN adminschip. Looking forward to read the application. Ciell (talk) 17:21, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell and Tiven2240, Thank you very much. I would go through the rules and you would see my application soon. Nokib Sarkar (talk) 17:48, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Description - Call for participation to African Film and Cinema 2024.

Culture Connect: African Film & Cinema is a new initiative under the umbrella of the Culture Connect Africa Project, developed by African & Proud (AP). Scheduled to run from February to March 2024, this program focuses on celebrating and enhancing the visibility of African cinema and film heritage. It includes a series of activities such as training sessions, edit-a-thons, and competitions. The aim is to engage a wide audience in exploring and promoting African cinematic culture on Wikipedia.

The primary target for this banner campaign is users in African countries, but it also aims to reach global audiences interested in African film and cinema.

Given the unique focus on African cinema, the campaign is expected to attract a diverse range of participants, both new and experienced in Wikipedia editing. The banner serves a dual purpose: promoting the event and recruiting new contributors to enrich Wikipedia's content on African cinematic heritage.

  • @Edriiic: Thanks for your first request. I will guide you through the process, no worries. At first, you cannot create campaigns and banners yourself. That's what the CentralNotice administrators myself are responsible for. Your request helps us to create the campaign. Some remarks:
    • We cannot use wiki markup in the banner source code, only HTML, JavaScript and CSS. However, I tried to create the campaign and banner as similar as possible. However, as you can see in the preview, there are some little changes. Can you provide a version of the logo without so much white space around it? Furthermore, you can see on the file page that the logo is proposed to be deleted because it lacks a permission to be published.
    • We can only enable campaigns for languages which are both available in the banner and landing page. I've added a translation option for the banner. Please add the texts yourself or motivate your communities to translate the texts as soon as possible. That's the translation link. Please also request a translation of the landing page: preparation of the page, activation of the translation by a translation administator, motivation of your communities to translate the texts as soon as possible.
  • Usually, we would also ask you to notify the affected Wikimedia projects on their village pumps. As this is limited to African countries (although I had to select each one individually), this is not fully necessary. Maybe you want to consider to inform English Wikipedia, though.
  • I will definitely need a better logo and really encourage you to mark the landing page for translation. As soon as this done and you approve the preview, I can enable the campaign. If you have any further questions, please let me know. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:29, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @DerHexer: thanks for your response on my request and also for the guidance.
I have now marked the landing page for translation, and also provided translation for banner with the link you provided.
I have also uploaded a new photo with less white background here.
The Banner looks very good, thank you! Just a little adjustment, please can the green boarder lines just be on the bottom part, but if that's not possible it should be on all the boarder lines of the leaderboard.
    Thanks. Edriiic (talk) 12:25, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Edriiic: Okay, I've added the green banner line only to the bottom and used the smaller logo, thank you! The rest also looks good to me. I've activated the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:10, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: Thank you! Everything looks sorted. Edriiic (talk) 20:16, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer @Edriiic Hi both, I am just now encountering this banner -- and I have several concerns:
    • First the activity does not look well designed for new editors (points are only rewarded for high skill activities, newcomers would not reasonably be expected to learn enough to get points).
    • Second by advertising a potential prize in the banner, we are targeting a not very genuine motivation for contributing from anonymous users (cash prizes based on volume are not a recommended practice with new editors, who are prone to overenthusiastic contributions that then become patrolling problems on the subsequent wikis).
    • Third the cash prize language may create both brand and other concerns (@DerHexer I would like to update some rules somewhere on this).
I recommend that we turn off the banner for anonymous users, and remove the language about the prize. Advertising that the project is a writing contest should be enough for experienced editors to understand that there is light competition, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:37, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds reasonable. I've removed the cash amount and disabled the banner for anonymous users for now. Please keep me updated how to proceed here. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:48, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
