The first trailer for Star Wars prequel series Obi-Wan Kenobi has dropped ahead of its May release on Disney Plus, and it’s teased fans with a glimpse of a young Luke Skywalker.
Ewan MacGregor’s Jedi master is shown watching over the young Skywalker and his family, while seemingly involving himself in Resistance activities against the Empire.
‘The fight is done,’ he says in a voice-over, adding: ‘We lost’, before he has heard telling someone – we presume the Skywalker family to ‘stay hidden’.
Although not much regarding plot detail is given away in the trailer, it does also offer the first look at Sith Inquisitors, the Empire’s Jedi hunters who also fight with lightsabers.
Joel Edgerton’s return as Owen Lars from the prequel films is also briefly shown as he lays low in a crowd, alongside plenty of snippets of action.
The trailer switches between the deserts of Tatooine and plenty of off-world action as it teases challenging times for the Jedi.
‘The key to hunting the Jedi is patience,’ announces one foe as the voice-over continues. ‘Jedi cannot help what they are, their compassion leaves a trail. The Jedi code is like an itch – he cannot help it!’
The 90-second clip then ends with the iconic sound of Darth Vader’s breathing, perhaps supplied by Hayden Christensen, who returns as Anakin Skywalker–although he is not seen in the trailer.
New members of the cast include Eternals’ star Kumail Nanjiani, Bennie Safdie, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr and Sung Kang.
The new series, which will debut on May 25, marks the first time McGregor in years that the actor has donned his Jedi robes, as – bar voice cameos – he was last seen as Obi-Wan in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith.
The release date is significant for fans, given that it will mark exactly 45 years since the first film in the franchise, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, was released in 1977.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, when Obi-Wan witnessed Anakin turn to the dark side, forgoing the ways of the Jedi and becoming the most notorious Sith Lord in the galaxy.
