Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Friday’s (June 21) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on Monday June 24 at 7pm.

Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis) and Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass) officially declared themselves boyfriends in a heartwarming offering of the soap, refusing to be parted by Misbah Maalik (Harvey Virdi).

The much-loved couple, known to fans as HayRay, have been a long time in the making, with scenes as early as this time last year hinting at a potential romance for the two.

Lucas, however, was subsequently targeted by conversion therapist Carter Shepherd (David Ames) and his twisted mentor Declan Hawthorne (Alan Turkington), which left him full of so much self-loathing that he lashed out, attacking Dillon at the folly a number of weeks ago.

Dillon, however, harboured no ill will towards him, refusing to get the police involved as he believed Lucas had been through enough.

With Carter behind bars and, feeling comfortable enough to come out to dad Ste (Kieron Richardson), Lucas apologised to Dillon for his behaviour. Soon afterwards, the boys shared their first kiss.

But with conversations this week turning to sex, their parents and guardians were inevitably involved, with Ste and James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) walking in on them tearing each other’s clothes off!

Misbah shared her concerns about Lucas’ violent streak with Dillon, pleased that they were cooling things off. Dillon, however, subsequently reunited with Lucas, with the pair soon having sex.

Getting wind of their passion, Misbah believed that they were rushing into things too quickly and therefore tried to ban them from seeing one another. Lucas was devastated when Dillon hesitated in responding to her question about whether or not he thinks they’re ready for a longterm future, with Misbah having seemingly got her way.

Before exiting, Lucas told Dillon that he loved him.

Wracked with guilt, Dillon made it his mission to fight for Lucas, once again berating Misbah over her insistence on him staying away from his one true love.

Misbah reiterated her concerns over Lucas’ violence, with Dillon reminding her that such a thing was largely down to Carter’s manipulation and control, but Misbah remained steadfast in her decision, recalling her own experiences with violence at the hands of son Imran (Ijaz Rana) as she told him that he and Lucas need to stay away from one another.

At the high school, Lucas was encouraged by John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) to try and make things right with Dillon. He did just that but, much like fans over the past few nights, Lucas was taken aback by Dillon’s apparent nonchalance to the whole situation as he revealed his intention to do as Misbah told him.

But a surprise twist saw Dillon hand Lucas a note with a smile, organising a meeting at the folly for later.

Phew!

Lucas couldn’t help but smile and, later, he headed to the folly, where he pleaded with Dillon not to give up on them, promising to be better as he reiterated that he would never hurt him again.

Dillon interrupted his powerful speech to kiss him passionately, telling Lucas that he believes him. Lucas smiled once again, asking him if this means that Dillon is officially his ‘boyfriend’.

The answer was yes.

And as for Misbah? Well, Dillon suggested that they ‘play the game’ and keep their romance under wraps for now. ‘Until the time is right,’ he said. ‘Then we’ll show Misbah and your parents that they were wrong about us.’

Caring as ever, Dillon was quick to add that they’ll only do it this way if Lucas is ‘sure’ about their future. With a smile, Lucas reassured Dillon that he is what he wants as he looked him right in his eyes and told him that he loved him.

Dillon reciprocated the words, as the two boys closed the gap between them, resting their heads against one another in the centre of the ruins at the folly. A far cry from the scenes at the folly last month.

My, how far they’ve come.

The star-crossed lovers sealed their new status as boyfriends with a romantic kiss or two, before Lucas – high on love – told Dillon that he can’t believe they’re now boyfriends.

I don’t know about you but my heart is full right now.
