David Duchovny has stripped off for his new movie Reverse the Curse and hopes it makes viewers laugh.
The 63-year-old originally found fame on The X-Files as agent Fox Mulder, and the 1993 show quickly established David as a heartthrob… quite rightly.
In the sci-fi series, his character was looking for paranormal explanations for unsolved FBI cases, while making viewers swoon over his Hollywood good looks.
With Gillian Anderson (Agent Dana Scully) as his co-star, he continued on the programme until 2002, before rejoining fourteen years later for a shorter stint.
Three decades after the first episode airs, David, who also starred in Twin Peaks and Californication, is still busy with exciting projects, including this latest film based on his book Bucky F*cking Dent.
The romantic comedy follows Ted (Logan Marshall-Green), as he moves back in with his father Marty (David), who has a fatal illness. To ensure Marty’s happiness and try to extend his life, Ted along with grief counsellor Mariana (Stephanie Beatriz) and friends fake a winning streak for his favourite sports team Red Sox.
David, who also wrote and directed the film, has now shared his intention to use nudity as a tool to make people laugh. This is evident in the scene where Marty strips naked while in the locker room with Ted, and tells him that he has a ‘perfectly respectable p**k’.
‘You can look at horrific things with a sense of humor, and the humor comes from the fact that it’s going to happen to all of us,’ he explained to Salon.
‘It’s not like some people age and some people don’t, some people die and some people don’t.’
In another moment, his character jokes: ‘It looks like a dead sparrow where my c**k should be.’
‘If I’ve got one of my main characters — me — showing his naked body to his son and saying [the above] I find that funny.
‘I think we can laugh at that, and then hug it out. And he comments on his son’s penis in a way that’s funny. I’m laughing and I’m also moved in a way,’ he shared.
Since the film’s release, it has earned a highly respectable 95% Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and 63% from critics.
During the interview, David also summarised why his TV shows have remained popular.
He puts Twin Peaks’ ensuring success down to creator David Lynch, who he describes as having ‘an odd and singular imagination’. David added of The X-Files: ‘I can’t think of another show that has as much hope and fear in it. That’ll always be a powerful mixture.’
