After enduring a stroke and being hospitalised, Sharon Stone then discovered her entire life’s savings had been ‘taken’ from her.

In 2001, the Basic Instinct star suffered from a medical emergency where she bled into her brain for nine days.

It took seven years for her to fully recover and after all that, despite her on-screen success, the 66-year-old icon was left with ‘zero money’.

‘People took advantage of me over that time,’ Sharon shared in a new interview. ‘I had $18 million (£14 million) saved because of all my success, but when I got back into my bank account, it was all gone.’

From her fridge to her phone, everything had been put in other people’s names and nothing was left for Sharon herself.

The Casino actress told the Hollywood Reporter how her brain had been pushed to the front of her face, where it wasn’t supposed to be.

This impacted her senses drastically, she couldn’t even read for a few years and added: ‘Things were stretched and I was seeing colour patterns. A lot of people thought I was going to die.’

Her formal diagnosis was a subarachnoid haemorrhage, treated by surgery to insert a small coil to stem the bleeding.

At this time, Sharon was forced to step away from acting and later said she felt she had ‘lost her place’ in Hollywood because of this.

Two years after the haemorrhage, the Total Recall star returned to her career with a guest role in The Practice — a role which won her an Emmy.

Her push back into Hollywood was not easy though and she moved into more independent films, continuing to work across both film and TV with numerous well-known actors and directors.

Sharon explained that she has decided to let go of any anger around the traumatic time and instead lives in joy now.

She shared: ‘I decided not to hang onto being sick or to any bitterness or anger. If you bite into the seed of bitterness, it never leaves you.’

The writer of Casino’s book and screenplay, Nicholas Pileggi, praised Sharon’s dedication to her craft to Metro.co.uk recently as he recalled her getting injured in front of the camera.

He said: ‘I cannot tell you what a great actress she is in Casino. She got bruised with Bob (Robert De Niro).

‘There’s a scene in Casino where he drags her along the floor to throw jewellery at her, to get rid of her. She didn’t break ribs but had all kinds of bruises and contusions.

‘They did it so realistically that she really got bruised up to battle. Nurses were looking at her, they wondered whether she’d even be able to come in the next day.

‘It was all patched up and everything, she came in the next day ready to work. I remember Marty (Martin Scorsese) and Bob were so impressed with her.’
