The head rush of new love pervades the second EP from Melbourne pop artist KYE. While the title track likens nascent romance to the sugary hit of its namesake beverage, “Sorbae Type Beet” rattles off various flavours of frozen treats as another close comparison. Even the more sombre and affecting demo “Sunkist” takes its title from a sweet soda. But despite KYE’s penchant for giddy excitement, the Zimbabwe-born, London-raised singer reflects on the flip side of romantic potential with “Heavy Love”, an emotionally grounded duet with Budjerah. Other tracks skew more to the club, with “Clique” bottling the distinctive feeling of dancing with someone special and “Bossin’” celebrating personal empowerment in a crowded social setting. With moments here evoking Solange and Destiny’s Child alike, KYE refines a snappy mix of pop and R&B that spins relatable moments into memorable choruses.
