Hip-Hop and Jazz Fusion Essentials

Free-flowing, deeply personal, amplifying America’s voiceless: jazz and hip-hop were natural allies. In the ’80s and ’90s, New York groups like Stetsasonic, Gang Starr and Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth laced their tracks with samples from the Blue Note and Impulse! labels. A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul recruited Ron Carter and Maceo Parker for sessions, and groups like Digable Planets and Dream Warriors exuded jazz-aware bohemian cool. Jazzers like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Branford Marsalis took notice, and for a while, two of America’s greatest art forms were sharing a wavelength.
