The National Training, Education, and Workforce Survey (NTEWS) is a nationally representative survey of individuals ages 16 through 75. This survey collects information on the following topics: educational enrollment and attainment, nondegree credential types (vocational certificates, occupational licenses, and industry-recognized certifications), work experience programs such as apprenticeships and internships, employment characteristics, and demographic characteristics. Data from this survey provide information on the prevalence of work-related credentials and the relationship between these credentials and employment outcomes, with a particular focus on the Skilled Technical Workforce, the segment of the U.S. workforce that is highly skilled in science and engineering fields but does not have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
The NTEWS is sponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It is administered by the U.S. Census Bureau. It is fielded every two years. The next collection is planned for Spring 2024.

The Census Bureau collects the data on behalf of NCSES and NCES.
From 2009 to 2017, GEMEnA worked to develop and validate national measures of the participation in and credentialing of education and training for work. This work was the initial step in developing the NTEWS data collection.
The ATES is a survey that was administered in 2016 to adults ages 16 to 65 who were not enrolled in high school and focused on nondegree credentials and work experience programs.
