Southern California woman snatches pursuit suspect’s car keys before police

A high-speed police pursuit of two suspects believed to have stolen a vehicle came to an unusual end Tuesday night in the San Fernando Valley when a woman, who had not been in the car during the chase, approached the suspects and secured the keys before police.

The pursuit, which lasted about a half hour, unfolded on the evening of July 9.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Devonshire Division successfully deployed a spike strip, flattening at least one of the tires on the alleged stolen car.

Sky5 was over the pursuit when the driver pulled over in the area of Welby Way and Yarmouth Avenue in Reseda.

Neither of the two suspects immediately exited the vehicle.

“All of a sudden, this woman walks up, knocks on the window and starts talking to the two people in the car,” KTLA’s Gil Leyvas said. “She convinced them to come out and surrender.”

The unidentified woman secured the keys to the car as both suspects exited the vehicle with their hands up and the woman walked away, presumably to hand the keys over to police.

“A spike strip ended it, but the lady that walked up to it is the one that brought them out of the vehicle,” Leyvas added.

So far, police have not identified the woman, nor have they said what relationship she may or may not have had with the stolen vehicle suspects.
