Innovation is at the core of what we do. Last week we hoisted our solar-powered, unmanned, remote-operated kelp harvester vessel into the water. A world's first 🏆🏆   "It was a moment of immense pride. We've been working toward this, and now it's finally real. The next step will be to add the cutting system and the offloading conveyor so it can harvest the kelp remotely. When this is done we will have the worlds first solar powered remote controlled workboat!" Our efforts at Kelp Blue, along with 15 other initiatives, have been endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade! 🌎 This recognition shows the significant impact we're having in rewilding the oceans and raising global awareness of the role Giant Kelp plays in this effort 🌊 The Ocean Decade is dedicated to advancing ocean science and knowledge to reverse the decline of our marine ecosystems and unlock new opportunities for sustainable development. It's encouraging to see our work acknowledged by such a significant initiative, underlying we're heading in the right direction. The United Nations General Assembly has entrusted UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) with leading the coordination and implementation of this vital Decade. Let's continue the great work forward! We welcomed another (shy!) visitor to our kelp forests in Lüderitz, Namibia: the Dark Shyshark (Haploblepharus Pictus) 🦈 These very cute sharks can grow to 60cm long (2 feet), although we have mostly been seeing small juveniles, hanging out on the blades and holdfasts of the kelp. One of them has even taken a liking to Kelpie Anna Reid (see second photo)🥹. The Dark Shyshark has some pretty unique traits. 🌊 When threatened, the Dark Shyshark curls up into a ring with its tail covering its eyes - this behaviour gives it the nickname "Shyshark" 🌊 The Dark Shyshark is found exclusively off the coast of South Africa and surroundings. 🌊 Dark Shysharks are nocturnal hunters, coming out at night to feed on small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks - such as octopus or squid. 🌊 Their maximum lifespan is 25 years. They reach sexual maturity around 15 years old. Females then produce 2 eggs at a time enclosed in a purse-like capsule egg casing. The eggs will hatch after 6-10 months and the juveniles will find shelter in the kelp or rocky bottom. Our many sightings while diving are another great sign of a developing ecosystem, with the kelp providing a great shelter for the juvenile shysharks 💙 Looking forward to our next visitors! #biodiversity #boost #Return #giantkelp #shark #monitoring

Welcome to our Garden of Eden in Lüderitz, Namibia—a sustainable and harmonious garden in the middle of the desert! 🌳 At the heart of our garden, you'll find the innovative research fields where Kelpies are testing StimBlue+, a biostimulant derived from cultivated Macrocystis Pyrifera (giant kelp), on a variety of crops. In this 2-hectare trial plot, we've conducted and are continuing to conduct trials on olive trees, radishes, acacia trees, vineyards, fig trees, aloe vera, citrus grapefruit, potatoes, butternut squash, and more. StimBlue+ offers farmers a higher financial return on investment through proven yield improvements. It mixes greatly with existing irrigation systems, reducing the need for additional farming inputs and synthetic fertilizers. Haven’t tried StimBlue+ yet? At Kelp Blue, we believe that social capital is the most valuable return on investment 🙏 Today marked a significant milestone as we launched our PADI Open Water course, with the inaugural confined water session taking place at the Navy Pool, in Lüderitz, Namibia. Despite the cold temperatures, the enthusiasm of our trainees and the dedication of our trainers radiated warmth and positivity 🌞 This course represents more than just an opportunity to learn diving skills; it is a step towards fostering a deeper connection with the ocean and promoting environmental education 🌊 We are proud of our Kelpies' commitment and excited to see the next generation of divers take to the (very cold) waters with both skill and a sense of stewardship.
