Luxe hotels in China are exposed for their disgusting cleaning practices

Chinese authorities are inspecting luxury hotels after a hidden camera allegedly showed their unsanitary cleaning practices.

On November 14, an activist blogger using the “Huazong” uploaded the video on Weibo, which is China’s version of Twitter. The 12 minute clip features workers using dirty towels to clean utensils. Some workers could be seen cleaning sinks and cups with the same towel.

The video also includes big brand hotel chains including the Sheraton and Waldorf Astoria, who have since apologized, reports The AP.

The verified user said that this is common practice in China, saying he has spent 2,000 nights at 147 hotels over six years across the country. The video quickly drew outrage online, and has since been viewed more than 30 million times.

On November 15, the Chinese tourism ministry asked authorities to investigate the 14 hotels that were featured in the video.

A rep at The Peninsula hotel in Beijing said that the hotel passed the on-site examination.

“The hotel will still take measures to strengthen the implementation of the standard procedures for room service staff to ensure all aspects meet the established standards of the Peninsula,” the statement said on the hotel’s Weibo account, reports AP.

Meanwhile The Shangri-La Hotel in Fuzhou, which was featured in the video, stated that the workers violated hygiene standards, while the Park Hyatt in Beijing said it was “an isolated occurrence,” according to The AP.
